OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball held their own against the high-powered, 14th-ranked Tigers of DePauw University, but were still dealt a loss, 60-41, on Saturday afternoon.
After the game, Oberlin College women's basketball celebrated the career of their lone senior,
Briana Santiago.
It was a back-and-fourth tug of war in the early minutes and DePauw posted a four-point lead heading into the second quarter. The Crimson and Gold held the DePauw advantage to single digits midway through the second frame, but a quick 8-0 run pushed the Oberlin deficit to 11, 24-13. The Yeowomen managed to dial the DePauw lead back to nine in the closing 30-seconds of the half.
The Tigers surged into the second half and would not surrender their double-figure lead for the remainder of the contest.
A 4-0 to open the second half gave the Tigers a quick 15-point advantage 2:04 into the third quarter. The two sides traded buckets as the quarter dragged on and the Tigers took a 16-point cushion into the fourth after Santiago misfired a three-pointer as the frame expired. Santiago finished with two rebounds and an assist on Saturday afternoon.
Down the stretch, the Yeowomen hung tough, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome as the Tigers put the game away.
The Yeowomen's performance was a team effort to try to stifle the Tigers. The Crimson and Gold finished with a combined seven blocks led by
Olivia Canning's three to go along with her six points on 3-of-6 from the floor with three rebounds, one steal and assist.
Sophomore
Alex Stipano led the Oberlin offense in the regular season finale with 14 points on 3-of-14 shooting, 1-of-8 from beyond the arc and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. The Alexandria, Virginia native also posted five rebounds in the loss.
Behind Stipano was first-year
Jasmine Sorrells who netted seven points (2-of-2; 3-of-5 from the line) to lead the Oberlin bench.Â
The Oberlin women closed the regular season one game below .500 at 12-13 overall and 9-7 against North Coast Athletic Conference opponents.Â
With Hiram's upset over the second-place Kenyon College Ladies on Saturday afternoon, the Yeowomen finish the regular season fifth, making them the five seed in the upcoming 2016-17 NCAC Tournament, that begins on Tuesday night.
The Yeowomen, guided by head coach
Kerry Jenkins will travel to Hiram, Ohio and take on the Terriers on Tuesday, February 21 in the opening round of the 2016-17 NCAC Championships Tournament. Tipoff on Tuesday night is slated for 7:30 p.m.
