OBERLIN, Ohio - In the final mid-week North Coast Athletic Conference bout of the regular season, the Oberlin College women's basketball team got back to .500 (12-12) on the year and advanced to 9-6 in conference play with a commanding, 67-40, win over the Allegheny College Gators.
The Crimson and Gold cashed in another wire-to-wire victory, using a 18-9 differential in the first quarter to gain a big lead early on. Halfway through the frame, the Gators locked the game at 7-7 with a three-ball from Delaney Arbore, but the Yeowomen closed the opening 10-minute stanza with an 11-2 run.
With 7:57 gone in the second quarter, the Yeowomen pushed their lead to 20-Â the largest of the half - when junior forward
Tyler Parlor split a pair of free throws en route to a five-point, five-rebound performance.
Senior
Briana Santiago led all-scorers in the win as she compiled a career-high 13 points (3-of-4; 75%) off the bench to accompany four assists, three rebounds and one take-away. The duo of
Abby Andrews and
Alex Stipano also finished in double-figures netting 10 points (4-of-9; 44.4%) and 12 points (3-of-8; 37.5%), respectively, to lead the Yeowomen past the Gators on Wednesday night.
Olivia Canning was a bucket away from scoring in double-figures with nine points, but led the way with four blocks taking her season total to 87.
The Gators trimmed the Oberlin advantage back to 16 as the half expired and the Yeowomen led, 32-16 at the intermission.
The Crimson and Gold got a slow start out of the halftime break, but maintained the double-digit lead through the third quarter, leading by as much as 26 heading into the final frame.
Oberlin cruised through the closing quarter, extending the Allegheny deficit to 30 point four times before closing out the matchup with another 'W', marking a fourth consecutive win for head coach
Kerry Jenkins'Â crew and eighth victory in their last nine tries.
Oberlin shot 44 percent (22-of-50) in the win while limiting the Gators to just 23.5 percent (16-of-68). The Yeowomen also cashed in 22 points off of 20 Gator turnovers.
Oberlin College women's basketball will return to the hardwood on Saturday, February 18, as they take on the 14th ranked (d3hoops.com) DePauw University Tigers in the regular season finale. The Yeowomen will celebrate Senior Day for the game against Tigers as the first half of a women's-men's, Saturday afternoon doubleheader which ill begin at 1 p.m.
