Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Poyle Leads Yeomen Past Allegheny

OBERLIN, Ohio - Senior captain Jack Poyle notched a season-high 25 points as Oberlin College men's basketball squeezed out a tough victory over the Allegheny College Gators, 87-78, on Wednesday night inside of Philips Gymnasium.

It was a back-and-forth affair from the tip-off as the Yeomen and Gators traded the lead seven times and brought the game to a deadlock four times in the opening half.

The Yeomen took a two-point lead into the halftime with the scoreline at 45-43. Poyle struck for 15-points on 4-of-8 shooting in the opening half to lead all scorers at break. He finished 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the floor, 5-of-8 (62.5%) from three-point range and 4-of-5 (80%) from the charity stripe to claim his 25 points, which moves him into 16th all-time in program history with 1,178 to date. Poyle's seven assists against the Gators also ties a single-game career-high for the Avon, Ohio native.

As the Gators captured a two-point lead 15-minutes into the first half, the Yeomen ignited an offensive run that earned Oberlin the largest lead thus far. Three consecutive three-balls from Eric Holt, Poyle and Eli Silverman-Lloyd put the Yeomen on top by seven, 43-36.

Slowly the Gators chipped away at the Oberlin advantage over the final 4:51 of the frame, drawing the game back to a tie at 43-43 before Silverman-Lloyd knocked down a contested jumper to push the Yeomen in front. Silverman-Lloyd notched 12 points on 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the field along with six rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win.

Holt posted 20 points on 6-of-16 (37.5%) shooting, 4-of-11 (36.3%) from three, marking the 10th time in 11 matchups that the second-year, Atherton, California has finished in double-figures.

Out of the break the Oberlin offense found a rhythm and maintained their single-digit lead, extending it to as much as seven, 67-60, midway through the second half with a jumper from rookie Andre Campbell en route to 10 points (5-of-9; 55.5%). His ten on Wednesday night against the Gators marks his fifth double-figure performance in the last six outings.

A big three-pointer from Allegheny's Evan Zabriski dialed back the Oberlin advantage, but Joshua Friedkin answered with a three-point play, after knocking down a layup in traffic and converting the free throw. Allegheny worked the Oberlin lead back two five points multiple times in the closing minutes of the matchup, but the Yeomen remained resilient and held off a would-be comeback.

The win over the visiting Gators moves the Yeomen to 3-21 overall and 2-15 against North Coast Athletic Conference foes.

The Yeomen will bring the regular season to a close on Saturday afternoon as they celebrate Senior Day and host the DePauw University Tigers at 3 p.m. Tip-off for the men's game is set as the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader. The Yeowomen host the 14th ranked Tigers at 1 p.m.
