Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stipano’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Oberlin Over Wittenberg

Springfield, Ohio – Sophomore Alex Stipano banked-in a 3-pointer from the right wing as the final horn sounded to give the Oberlin College women's basketball team a, 53-50, road win at Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon.

Stipano's heroic shot marked her third triple-hit of the game as she led all scorers with 15 points. Classmate Olivia Canning added her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow interior presence Abby Andrews added eight points.

The win marked the third straight for the Yeowomen and seventh in their last eight tries as they are now 11-12 overall and currently sit firmly in fourth place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings at 8-6.

A pair of layups from Canning had the Yeowomen out in front 50-43 with 3:41 left to play. However, the Tigers would not go away as they increased their defensive pressure, forcing six Oberlin miscues down the stretch to fight all the way back. Sydney Mayle would tie the game at 50 on a layup with 26 seconds to go only to see their efforts come up short on Stipano's game-winner.

It was a game of runs throughout the first quarter as Oberlin started the contest by opening up a 7-0 lead, but the Tigers would answer back to tie the game at 10. The Yeowomen were later leading 15-10, but settled for just a 15-14 cushion after one 10-minute period.

No more than three points would separate the two foes in the second quarter. A 5-1 mini spurt that featured a three from Stipano and a jumper from Brianna Santiago gave Oberlin a 29-27 edge with 96 seconds left in the half, but it was the Tigers who ultimately took a 31-29 cushion into the locker room.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as the teams continued to trade point-for-point with Oberlin taking a slim 42-41 edge into the fourth quarter. In total the game featured 14 ties and four lead changes.

Oberlin shot 42 percent from the floor with 21 makes on 50 shots. The Tigers connected at just a 29.3 percent (17-of-58) success rate, but were able to stay close due in part to 19 Oberlin turnovers. The Yeowomen also cashed in just half of their free throws, going 7-of-14 at the line. The Tigers were much better at the stripe, hitting 15 of the 20 freebies they hoisted for a 75 percent clip.

Oberlin returns home to host Allegheny College on Wednesday as they will leadoff a doubleheader with the men's team. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
