Oberlin, OH – Abby Andrews' drive through the lane led to a game-winning layup with 23 ticks left on the clock lifted the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a, 66-62, victory over Ohio Wesleyan University at Philips Gym.
Oberlin, who led for just 1:51 in the final period, trailed 56-52 with 4:49 left in the game. Andrews' layup capped off an 11-6 stretch for the Yeowomen and gave the them their first lead since the 8:32 mark, 63-62. Three late free throws by senior captain
Tyler Parlor and two key defensive stops would seal the victory.
On the stat sheet, four-of-five starters finished in double figures led by
Olivia Canning who finished with 19 points and nine boards.
Alex Stipano would ended the game with 16 points, while
Ally Driscoll accumulated 11 and Andrews chipped in 10.
In the first quarter, the Battling Bishops jumped out to an early 8-4 lead when Elea Karras knocked down a shot from beyond the arc at the 7:18 mark. The Yeowomen answered the early Ohio Wesleyan lead with a 10-6 run capped off by a layup by Andrews, which gave Oberlin its first lead since the opening basket, 16-14, with 5:01 on the clock. Ohio Wesleyan would outscore the Yeowomen 7-5 in the final minutes of the quarter to give them a 21-20 lead.
The Battling Bishops extended their lead to five, 28-23, when Meghann Dunning knocked down a jumper at the 7:25 mark. The Oberlin defense stepped up as they held Ohio Wesleyan to just five points for the remainder of the half. The strong defensive effort led to 11 points for the Yeowomen, giving them a 34-30 lead at the intermission.
In a low scoring third stanza, Oberlin earned its largest lead of the game, 45-40, when
Jasmine Sorrells finished off a play in the post with 2:25 left in the quarter. A late five-point surge by the Battling Bishops would tie the game at 45.
The Yeowomen finished the day making 26-of-66 (39%) shots from the field and went 9-of-12 (75%) form the charity stripe. Ohio Wesleyan made 24-of-60 (40%) attempts and was just 4-of-7 (57%) from the foul line.
Oberlin heads into the holiday break with a record of 6-2 and 4-0 in conference play. The Battling Bishops dropped their first league game and fall to 0-6 on the year.
The Yeowomen are back in action when they travel to Colorado Springs for the Pikes Peak Holiday Classic on December 29-30 hosted by Colorado College. Oberlin squares off against Illinois Wesleyan on day one at 3 p.m. eastern time.
