Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Top Big Red to Remain Perfect in NCAC Play

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought, 62-56, win over the Denison University Big Red on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Junior center Olivia Canning led the Oberlin offense with 16 points and ripped down 10 rebounds as she notched her fourth double-double of the season. Senior Abby Andrews added 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Ally Driscoll was 5-of-10 for 10 points to accompany her five helpers.

The game featured 11 lead changes and six ties, while no more than six points separated the two foes throughout the 40-minute battle.

Oberlin took its first lead of the second half just before the third-quarter horn as Maggie Gross banked in a turnaround jumper from outside the restricted area to give the Yeowomen a 45-44 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

With 5:17 left to play in the game, a beautiful step-back jumper from the top of the key by Driscoll put Oberlin out front 51-50 and the Yeowomen would stay ahead the rest of the way. Canning, who had six points in the quarter, increased the OC advantage to 57-53 with a layup at the 2:20 mark.

With 91 seconds still to expire, a corner 3-pointer from Addie Buzas had the cushion back down to one, but after a key offensive rebound by Tyler Parlor, Canning would strike again after getting a nice entry pass from Andrews with under a minute to go. Denison would turn the ball over on its next possession and Oberlin would ice the game by making three of four free throws down the stretch.

In the opening quarter the Big Red led 16-10, but Oberlin ended the frame with a 5-0 spurt that featured a triple-hit from Leo Ross. It was the start of a 12-2 run to give the Yeowomen a 22-18 lead. However, Denison answered back and took a 36-31 advantage into the locker room.

The third quarter as nip-and-tuck throughout as Denison led by no more than four points the entire way until the very end when Gross gave her side the edge going into the final frame.

Denison, who was led by 14 points from Buzas, shot 31.5 percent (23-of-73) from the floor. Oberlin cashed in 24-of-55 shots for a 43.6 percent clip. The Yeowomen also benefited at the free throw line – depositing 12-of-15 (80%) charity tosses, while the Big Red made just two of their four attempts.

The Yeowomen, who have won three straight against the Big Red, remained unblemished in conference play as they sit atop the league at 3-0 and are 5-2 overall. The Big Red head back to Granville, Ohio, at 4-5 and 0-2 in conference play.

Oberlin will be back in action Saturday afternoon when it plays host to Ohio Wesleyan University at 1 p.m.
