Friedkin’s Career-High Not Enough as Yeomen Fall to Terriers

Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore guard Joshua Friedkin poured in a career-high 28 points, but he was the lone Yeoman in double figures as the visiting Hiram College Terriers earned a, 86-73, wire-to-wire victory over the Yeomen on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.

Friedkin went 7-of-9 from the floor, knocking down 5-of-6 triple-tries while going a perfect 9-of-9 at the free throw line. Andre Campbell, who ripped down a game-high nine rebounds, matched Nile Godfrey and Charles Tiedemann with eight points each in the loss.

Three of the Terriers' starters finished in double figures with senior Kelvin Jones leading the way with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Terrence Warren added 15 points, while Paul Jones chipped in with 12 for the victors.

Oberlin stayed within striking distance for most of the game thanks to its pristine free throw shooting, hitting on 21-of-22 charity tosses for a 95.5 percent success rate.

It was nip and tuck throughout the first half as a pair of Campbell free throws cut the Terriers' lead down to 23-20 at the 8:33 mark. However, Hiram responded with a 9-2 spurt over the next two minutes to grab its first double-digit advantage of the game at 32-22.

The Yeomen had a nice answer as a Christian Fioretti 3-pointer at the 3:09 mark had the deficit down to just one at 38-37. With 77 seconds left in the half the Terriers led 40-39, but they would close the half strong and take a 46-41 cushion into the intermission.

Early in the second session a 3-pointer from Brevin Dye pushed the Hiram advantage to 57-47, but Oberlin kept coming as a steal and layup by Fioretti made it 59-54 with 12:02 left to play. However, the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way.

A layup from Jones with 7:23 left in the game made it 72-61 and the Terriers would maintain a double-digit lead until the final whistle.

Oberlin shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor, which included a strong 8-of-14 (57.1%) effort from beyond the arc. Hiram checked in at 54.1 percent (33-of-61) shooting and turned 16 Yeomen turnovers into 22 points.

The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC. Hiram moved to 2-3 and 1-0 in league play.

Oberlin is back in action on Wednesday night when it heads south to Granville, Ohio for another NCAC tilt against the Denison University Big Red. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
