Wooster, Ohio — The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned its second North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the year with a, 72-51, victory over The College of Wooster at Timken Gym.
The Yeowomen improved to 2-0 in conference play and 4-2 overall. Wooster dropped its first conference game and falls to 2-3 overall.
Junior
Alex Stipano led the Oberlin offense, which scored a season-high 72 points, with a career-high 28 points. The Alexandria, Virginia, native shot 11-19 (57.9%) from the field and was 4-9 (44.4%) from three-point range. Also in double figures for the Yeowomen was senior captain
Tyler Parlor who contributed 13 points and shot 6-12 (50%) from the field. Stipano and Parlor each added three steals on the defensive end.
In the opening quarter, the Yeowomen jumped out to an early 12-4 lead when senior
Abby Andrews knocked down a shot with 5:11 left in the period. The Fighting Scots would answer with a 9-2 run to cut the Oberlin lead to 14-13 when Anna Gibbs finished a layup at the 1:45 mark. In the final minutes of the stanza, the Yeowomen outscored the Fighting Scots 4-0 to give them an 18-13 lead at the end of the first.
Early in the second quarter, Wooster cut the Oberlin advantage back down to four, 21-17, when Gibbs knocked down a shot from the charity stripe with 5:50 on the clock. The Yeowomen would outscore the Fighting Scots 14-4 in the remainder of the half. Oberlin took a 33-18 lead when Stipano made a jumper with 1:16 left in the frame en route to taking a 35-21 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Yeowomen would blow the game open by taking a 21-point lead, 48-27, when
Olivia Canning made a pair of foul shots at the 4:29 mark. Oberlin would get its cushion back up to 21 when Stipano converted from the foul line with 51 seconds left in the period, but a late layup by Wooster's Erica Roberts would make the score 53-34 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Yeowomen offense continued to roll as they would balloon the margin to 70-38 when
Ally Driscoll knocked down a shot from beyond the arc off a feed from Parlor with 6:20 left in the game. Wooster would make a late run against the Oberlin reserves, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Oberlin finished the day making 28-of-62 (41.2%) shots from the field, which included an 8-of-20 (40%) showing from three-point land. The Yeowomen went 8-of-10 (80%) from the charity stripe. Wooster struggled shooting, checking in at 21-of-68 (30.9%) while hitting on just 1-of-15 (6.7%) from beyond the arc.
Oberlin is off until next Wednesday when they host Denison for a 7:30 opening tip.
