Oberlin, Ohio – Senior captain
Tyler Parlor hit a 10-foot jumper from the right wing as time expired to lift the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a 46-45 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets on Sunday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen trailed 40-26 with 9:14 left to play in the game, but they held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for over six minutes as they began their comeback march. A jumper from
Alex Stipano at the 4:27 mark cut the margin down to nine at 40-31. She would follow with a pair of threes that really put the pressure on BW as her two triple-hits shrunk the Yellow Jackets' lead down to just five at 43-38 with 2:36 left to play.
A layup from BW's Tiffany Bentler made it 45-42, but
Ally Driscoll picked a perfect time to make her lone field goal of the game as her baseline jumper made it just a one-point game with 66 seconds to play.
Oberlin would miss its next three shots and were ultimately forced to foul with three seconds left. Sydney Diedrich would make the first and miss the second, which was corralled by
Olivia Canning.
With the timeout, Oberlin was able to advance the ball to the frontcourt. Parlor triggered the inbound to Driscoll who was quickly doubled in the corner, but she alertly got the ball back in the hands of Parlor to set her up for the game-winning shot.
The Yeowomen outscored the Yellow Jackets 20-6 in the fourth to complete the improbable comeback.
Stipano led all scorers with 16 points, while Canning finished with a near triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. Parlor ended with seven points to accompany her 10 boards.
Oberlin got out to a quick 8-2 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets settled in to tie the score at 10 after 10 minutes of play.
BW started the second session on a 7-0 spurt which was finally halted by a 3-pointer from Parlor at the top of the arc with 6:20 left in the opening half. An old fashioned 3-point play by Stipano had the BW advantage shrunk down to one, 19-18, with four minutes to go, but the Yellow Jackets closed out the half with another 7-0 burst to take a 26-18 lead into the intermission.
After scoring just eight points in the second quarter, the Yeowomen matched that total in the third as the Yellow Jackets increased their lead out 39-26 heading into the final quarter to set up what was a comeback for the ages.
Oberlin shot just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the floor, but did go 9-of-11 (81.8%) at the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets, who committed 20 turnovers, also did themselves a disservice at the charity stripe as they cashed in just 5-of-14 (35.7%) free throws while shooting 31.5 percent (17-of-54) from the field.
Oberlin moved to 3-2 on the season while the Yellow Jackets suffered their first blemish of the season as they head back to Berea at 3-1.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Wednesday at The College of Wooster. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
