Angola, Indiana — The Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to the No. 8 nationally ranked Trine University Thunder by a score of 80-32 at Hershey Hall.
With a quick turnaround Oberlin elected to rest its starters after playing in a hard fought 57-52 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Hiram College last night.
With the starters not playing, sophomore center Jasmine Sorrells made her second career start and the Yeowomen with a career-high 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Senior Anna Moore came off the bench and went a perfect 4-4 from the field for eight points.
The Thunder jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but first-year guard Leo Ross knocked down a three to tie the game at the 6:22 mark in the opening quarter. After Ross' made shot Oberlin would score just four points in the remainder of the stanza, and Trine held an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
There was a lot of back and forth play in the second period as the Thunder held a 24-14 lead when Shay Herbert made one of two free throws with 2:59 left in the half. Trine got things going in the final minutes of the quarter as they outscored the Yeowomen 10-2 in the final minutes giving them an 18 point lead, 34-16, at halftime.
In the third, the Thunder offense came out of the intermission firing on all cylinders. Trine extended its lead to 37 when Shay Herbert knocked down a three with 1:10 on the clock, but Cheyenne Arthur's made shot from the charity stripe would make the score 58-22 heading into the final period of play.
Trine extended its lead to 53 late in the fourth with another made three pointer by Brayden Curtis with 1:52 in the game, but the Yeowomen would score the final five points of the contest.
In the set back the Yeowomen shot 12-of-40 (30.0%) from the field and 7-of-14 (50.0%) from the foul line. The Thunder shot 33-of-67 (49.3%) from the field and 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the charity stripe.
Oberlin is off until Sunday when they host Baldwin Wallace University for a 3 p.m. opening tip.
