Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team used a diverse attack to take down the visiting Franciscan University Barons, 66-51, on Friday night at Philips Gym.
Junior
Eli Silverman-Lloyd spearheaded the Oberlin offense with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. The Culver City, California, native finished one rebound shy of his first-career double-double as his nine boards were a game-high.
The interior of the paint was controlled by sophomore
Andre Campbell and freshman
Jordan Armstrong. Campbell checked in with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Armstrong shined in his home debut with 12 points, four rebounds, and four blocks. Fellow big-man
Charles Tiedemann also added a career-best eight points in 12 minutes off the bench.
It was a tight contest throughout the opening half as Oberlin was clinging to just a 19-18 lead with 4:25 left to play in the frame. However, the Yeomen would close the half with an 11-3 spurt to take a 30-21 advantage into the intermission.
Early in the second session, a fast break layup by Tiedemann ballooned the Yeomen lead to 15, 43-28. However, the Barons didn't go away quietly as they slowly chipped away and shrunk the deficit down to nine, 55-46, with just under five minutes left to play.
Oberlin answered the call in fine fashion, short-circuiting any comeback bid with a 9-0 response run that featured four points from Silverman-Lloyd and a 3-pointer by
Joshua Friedkin.
The Yeomen defense stifled the Barons all evening long, holding them to just 33.9 percent (19-of-56) shooting while forcing 16 turnovers.
Offensively, Oberlin shot it at a 43.1 percent clip, hitting on 25-of-58 shots. However, the Yeomen struggled from both lines – going 11-of-18 (61.1%) at the charity stripe and while hitting on just 5-of-18 (27.8%) triple-tries.
The Barons, who were led by Keoni Sablan's 15 points, fell to 0-2 on the year. Oberlin evened its record at 1-1.
The Yeomen will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they play host to Earlham College.
