Scots Sour Senior Day for the Yeowomen

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team honored seniors Lola Gatti, Dana Thomas, and Claudia Scott prior to the match, but the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots soured the celebration by earning a four-set victory over the Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon.

Wooster took the opening set 25-19 before the Yeowomen rallied to win the second, 26-24. However, the Scots regained control and cruised to wins of 25-13 and 25-22 to finish off the match.

Scott had her best match of the season, hammering home 13 kills to go along with five aces. Thomas also impressed, hitting .269 with 11 kills on 26 swings, while sophomore Maura Gibbs chipped in with nine kills and a team-high 18 digs.

In the second-set win, Oberlin trailed 20-17, but an attack error and back-to-back aces by Scott tied the match at 20. Later tied at 24, the Yeowomen would earn the win with kills coming courtesy of Sara Chang and Jaya Flynn-Young.

Unfortunately, Oberlin could not sustain the momentum in the third set as the Scots opened up a big lead early and never looked back.

In the fourth, the Yeowomen held a 13-10 advantage, but a string of eight straight points by the Scots quickly flipped the advantage. Later in the game, Oberlin tried to get back in it as two straight aces from Scott cut the gap down to 23-21, but the Scots would short-circuit the threat and hold on for the three-point win.

Samantha Lam had 48 assists and eight digs in the loss. Chang finished with six kills, six digs and four aces, while Emily Kelkar added 16 digs on the backline.

The Yeowomen have now dropped six in a row, falling back to 9-9 on the year and 0-4 in the NCAC. The Scots moved to 12-9 and 1-2 in league action.

Oberlin returns to the court on Wednesday night when it hosts Hiram College at 7 p.m.
