Anderson, IN – The Oberlin College volleyball team notched its 10
th win of the season, earning a hard fought five-set win at Anderson University on Friday night.
After dropping the first set, 25-19, Oberlin regrouped to take the next two games by the scores of 25-21 and 25-10. However, the Ravens would win the fourth set 25-17 to force a decisive fifth game. The Yeowomen would never trail in the race to 15 as they held off the Ravens, 15-12.
The win snapped an eight-match slide for the Yeowomen and lifted their record to 10-11 on the season. The Ravens fell back to 10-17 with in the loss.
A trio of Yeowomen reached double figures in kills, led by sophomore
Lexi Mitchell's 16-kill effort. However, it was classmate
Jaya Flynn-Young who was the most efficient as she hammered home 11 kills on 21 swings to finish with an impressive .476 hitting percentage. Senior
Dana Thomas shined in the middle as she added 11 kills to go along with two aces.
Oberlin hit .240 in the match as sophomore
Samantha Lam had her offense in rhythm as she registered 49 assists in the win.
Along the back,
Emily Kelkar (16) and
Lola Gatti (10) combined for 26 digs, while Mitchell chipped in with 11.
In the second-set win, Oberlin raced out to a 6-0 advantage before the Ravens soared back to within one at 11-10. The Yeowomen quickly regained control, opening a five-point lead to even the match at 1-1.
After the teams split sets three and four, the race to 15 was on. Oberlin got a nice jump start by quickly building a 7-3 cushion, but the Ravens stayed close by getting the deficit down to two on multiple occasions.
Coming out of a timeout with Oberlin out in front 14-12, the match would quickly come to an end as
McLean Sammon sent down her seventh kill of the night to send the Yeowomen back to their hotel happy.
The Yeowomen are back in action tomorrow as they return to conference action at DePauw. The first serve is set for 12 p.m.
