Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team stayed with The College of Wooster Fighting Scots for four quarters, but in the end the Scots were able to hold off the Yeomen, 38-28, on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback
Zach Taylor put together his best performance of the season, throwing for 350 yards on 20-of-35 passing. The Artesia, California, native threw two touchdowns, but was intercepted twice. He also ran for 36 yards and a score in the setback.
Junior
Robby Reinheimer lead a diverse receiving attack, snagging six balls for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan Gleeson also went over 100 yards, finishing with 107 on just two catches. Senior
Corey Fussinger hauled in a team-high seven catches for 91 yards.
The Yeomen rushed for 150 yards on the ground, en route to finishing the day with 500 yards of total offense.
Khalil Rivers led the running attack with 63 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while
Chuck Williams added 51 yards on 13 totes of the ball.
The Yeomen struck with the game's first touchdown with 3:32 left in the first quarter. The Scots' previous drive went 92 yards on 16 plays, but they had nothing to show for it after the Oberlin defense stuffed Wooster running back Antonio Bailey on a 4
th-and-2 play from the Oberlin 5-yard line.
After taking over on downs, the Yeomen wasted no time in creating some breathing room as back-to-back positive rushes by Rivers that totaled 17 yards had the Scots thinking run, but instead Offensive Coordinator
Robert Matey elected to go up top. Taylor sucked in the defense with a play-fake and then found Gleeson deep down the field behind the Scots' secondary for a 79-yard TD.
In the second quarter things took a turn for the worse as Wooster marched 89 yards on 11 plays to even the score at 7-7 before Taylor was picked off the ensuing possession by Cam Pollard who ran it back 43 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-7.
Later trailing 21-7, Oberlin would cut the deficit back down to one score as Rivers capped an 11-play, 84-yard jaunt down the field. On the drive, the Yeomen converted a key 3
rd-and-7 with a 20-yard hook-up between Taylor and Fussinger. Later, the Yeomen had a 3
rd-and-2 from just outside the red zone and Taylor called his own number and kept the chains moving with a 3-yard run.
At the end of the first half, Oberlin took over from their own 20-yard line with just 1:15 left on the clock and no timeouts. They marched all the way down to the Wooster 6-yard line only to see the clock run out as Wooster held a 21-14 halftime lead.
Unfortunately, the third quarter was all Wooster as the Scots outscored the Yeomen 17-0 in the period to open up a 38-14 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Oberlin continued to fight to the final whistle, putting together two scoring drives in the fourth quarter.
Reinheimer finished off a 12-play, 73-yard march down the field as he hauled in a 22-yard scoring strike from Taylor to give him his second TD of the season and ninth of his career.
The Yeomen also executed a nice two-minute drill in the closing minutes of the game, needing just 56 seconds to cover 80 yards on five plays. Two straight completions to Reinheimer for 67 yards accounted for the bulk of the work before Taylor capped the game's scoring with a 2-yard TD run around the left side with him diving just inside the pylon.
Unfortunately, the final two scores were not enough to pose a threat on the eventual outcome as the Yeomen return home with as record of 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC. The Scots improved to 4-2 and 3-2 in league play.
Sophomore
Jubreel Hason led the defensive effort with a career-high 17 tackles to go along with a forced fumble.
Bennett Jackson made eight stops to move into fourth on the all-time list with 253 career tackles.
The Yeomen return home next Saturday to host No. 20 Wabash at 1 p.m.
