Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Wittenberg University Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
The Yeomen have now dropped three straight matches, falling back to 4-5-1 on the year and 0-2 in the NCAC. For the Tigers, it was their first win against the Yeomen since 2011 as they moved to 3-7-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. In last year's match-up, Oberlin dismantled Wittenberg by a 7-0 count.
Oberlin triggered just five shots in the match compared to Wittenberg's 17 as the hosts finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. However, the Yeomen did earn 10 corners compared to their six.
Austin Lewis' fourth goal of the season in the 27
th minute gave Wittenberg the early advantage and it would stay 1-0 all the way until the 73
rd minute as Alex Benoit beat
Connor English for an all-important insurance goal.
The Yeomen continued to scrap down the stretch and eventually broke through in the 77
th minute as
David Shostak finished off a corner kick service from senior
Jonah Blume-Kemkes.
The Tigers' Nick Foley was sent off with a red card from the Wittenberg bench, but unfortunately the Yeomen could not take advantage by finding the equalizer.
Williams took three of Oberlin's five shots with all three ending on frame. English went all 90 minutes in goal and made seven stops to run his season total to 42.
The Yeomen will look to get back on track on Wednesday night when they step out of conference for the final time this season to take on local rival Case Western Reserve at 7:30 p.m. in Cleveland.
