Oberlin, Ohio - Taking to the court for the second time in less than 24 hours, the Oberlin College women's basketball team put forth a battle, but in the end the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops were able to escape town with a 59-57 victory.
In the final minute of the game Oberlin had plenty of chances to tie it or potentially take the lead, but the Yeowomen would miss four free throws and a 3-pointer down the stretch to give the Bishops the win. The first matchup between these two teams required an extra overtime period to decide a winner - this time around, the Battling Bishops were able to ice the game in regulation to earn the season series sweep.
Junior
Tyler Parlor was the Yeowomen's top scorer, notching 16 points off numerous hard drives to the hoop and crafty finishes under the net. She added six rebounds in the setback.
Olivia Canning finished one rebound shy of her second straight double-double as she added 11 points and nine boards.
Abby Andrews chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Both squads traded buckets for the entirety of the first quarter, ending the period with the score knotted at 17. The Yeowomen shot 57 percent (8-of-14) from the field during that time period while the Battling Bishops shot 42.9 percent (6-of-14).
After ending the first quarter with four straight points to tie it, the Bishops increased their run to start the second half to build up a 23-17 lead. A fastbreak layup from
Alex Stipano had the Yeowomen back within one, 28-27, but OWU closed the opening half with seven straight points to take a 35-27 cushion into the break.
The Yeowomen would make some halftime adjustments as they used a 22-point third quarter to get back into the game. After going down by 10, Oberlin ripped off a 16-0 run that was capped by an old-fashioned 3-point play from
Maggie Gross to put Oberlin out in front 43-37 with 2:37 left in the frame. The quarter would come to an end on a nice up-and-under move in the paint from fellow rookie
Jasmine Sorrells as Oberlin was protecting a 49-44 margin heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, a layup from
Ally Driscoll gave Oberlin a 55-54 advantage, but the Bishops' Megan Kuether would respond with three of her game-high 17 points to put OWU out in front 57-55. A strong left-handed finish from Andrews would tie the game with 1:19 left to expire, but Nicole Popovich's rebuttal 16 seconds later would prove to be the game-winner.
Oberlin had one last chance as Canning went to the line for two foul shots with 1.3 seconds left. After missing the front end, Canning attempted to shoot the ball off the rim in hope for an Oberlin rebound, but Ohio Wesleyan senior forward Taylor Dickson secured the loose ball first and time ran out on the Yeowomen. The Yeowomen out-scored the Bishops 42-28 in the paint and won the rebounding war 34-27. However, they committed 17 turnovers that turned in 22 points for the Bishops.
Oberlin shot 50 percent from the floor with 26 makes on 52 shots, while OWU checked in at 40.7 percent (22-of-54). The loss dropped the Yeowomen 8-12 overall and 5-6 in the NCAC. The Bishops moved to 7-12 and 4-6 in league action.
The Yeowomen return to action on Wednesday, February 1st at 7:30 PM at The College of Wooster.
