Yeowomen Cruise to a Win at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball turned in another wire-to-wire win on Wednesday night as they dismissed the College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 62-41, in an NCAC mid-week matchup.

The Yeowomen got out to an early lead with 16 points in the first quarter, led by Alex Stipano's six, while holding the Fighting Scots to just five. Stipano finished with a team-best ten at the break en route to a game-high performance.

The Yeowomen continued to play suffocating defense and capitalize on Wooster mishaps throughout the second.

The Crimson and Gold earned a 21-point lead, 30-9, as the first half came to a close. Oberlin dropped another 16 points in the second quarter compared to Wooster's six to take a 32-11 advantage into the intermission.

The Yeowomen extended their lead to 25, 39-14, at the 6:39 mark in the third before both sides cooled off. A one-minute, 39-second scoreless run was snapped on a jumper from Wooster's Anna Gibbs to trim the Oberlin lead to 23, but Yeowomen fired back to take 29-point lead, their largest of the game, with just under three minutes remaining in the frame.

As the quarter drew to a close, the Fighting Scots managed to dial the Oberlin advantage back to 22, 48-26, heading into the fourth.

Despite their first half woes, the Fighting Scots rallied in the second half, but it was too little too late to overcome the deficit. In the closing stanza, the Yeowomen pushed the lead to as much as 27 with a basket from Anna Moore with 5:05 left in regulation. The Fighting Scots worked their deficit back to 21, but could do no more as time expired.

Stipano's big first half led to a game-high 13 points on 5-of-12 (41.6%) to accompany her two assists, one rebound and one steal. Junior Abby Andrews was the only other Yeowoman to finish in double-figures marking the fourth time in the last five outings. Against the Fighting Scots, Andrews tallied 12 points from a 5-of-9 (55.5%) performance from the floor, while she collected three rebounds, dished out two assists and came up with a steal.

Sophomore Olivia Canning posted nine points and a game-high six blocks, moving her season total to 78.

First-year Maggie Gross led the Oberlin bench with seven points on 1-of-2 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to go along with her six rebounds, and two steals.

As a unit Oberlin shot 40.7% from the field on 22-of-54, while posting 33.3% from three-range on 2-of-5 and an impressive 88.2% from the free throw line.

The win sends Oberlin to 9-12 overall and back to .500 at 6-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Oberlin women's basketball will take a week off of competition and return to the hardwood next Wednesday, February 8, when they host the Kenyon College Ladies. Oberlin will be searching for redemption as the Ladies held the Yeowomen to their lowest point total of the year, 31, the last time out.

Tipoff between the Ladies and Yeowomen is slated for 6 p.m., the first half of a women's-men's conference doubleheader.
