Yeowomen Extend Streak to Four at Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, MI - A powerful, second-quarter spurt was the difference maker that earned Oberlin College women's basketball the victory, as the Yeowomen dismissed the Kalamazoo College Hornets, 67-50.

Sophomore Olivia Canning posted her fifth double-double performance of the campaign with 16 points on 7-of-11 (63.6%) with ten rebounds in the convincing win up north. Even though Canning's double-double lead the way for the Yeowomen, Abby Andrews finished with 12 (5-of-9; 55.5%), eight of which came in Oberlin's vital second-quarter surge.

As a unit, the Crimson and Gold posted a 19-point second quarter, while holding the Hornets to 11, to slice the game open. With a three-point Oberlin advantage after the opening frame, the Hornets dialed the game back to a deadlock at 14-14 with 7:52 remaining in the half. From there, the Yeowomen composed a 17-6 run with 10 of Oberlin's 19 points came form inside the paint.

The Crimson and Gold took a 31-20 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. Both sides got a slow start out of the intermission, but Oberlin managed to captured their biggest lead of the game, 15, at the 7:03 mark in the third. The Yeowomen only managed 12 points through the third quarter but still extended their lead by three heading into the closing period.

After a slow third, both squads ignited offensively to combine for 45 points in the closing frame. Less than halfway through the fourth, Oberlin dialed the lead to 17, but the Hornets wouldn't go quietly. The Crimson and Gold did enough to hold off the Hornets and cruise to a 17-point win to bring non-conference action to a close.

The victory at Kalamazoo improves the Yeowomen to 8-11 overall, while the Crimson and Gold remain at .500, 5-5, against North Coast Athletic Conference opponents.

Canning's double-double was coupled with one block and an assist while Andrews finished with six rebounds, all defensive, two assists and one rejection. Behind Canning's team-high 16 points and Andrews' third consecutive double-figure performance was sophomore Alex Stipano who tallied 10 points on 3-of-11 (27.2%) and 2-of-9 (22.2%) from three to accompany her game-high three steals and four boards.

Rookie Sarah Thompson posted a team-high five assists while netting four points, hauling in six rebounds and tallying two steals.

Oberlin will return to the Buckeye State and return to the court in less than 24-hours. The Yeowomen will host the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, January 28, at 1 p.m.

The women will tip off as the first half of a women's-men's doubleheader. The Yeomen tangle with the Bishops at 3 p.m.
