Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Tame Tomcats

OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball submitted a wire-to-wire win on Monday night as they dismissed the Thiel College Tomcats, 68-56, in a non-conference tussle.

Oberlin executed head coach Kerry Jenkins schemes brilliantly to take down the visiting Tomcats. Offensively, the Crimson and Gold opened the game on an 8-0 run and utilized precise ball movement to tally an assist on to every bucket made in the opening quarter.

Despite their best efforts, the Tomcats just couldn't match up with Oberlin's post players as they Yeowomen posted 26 points in the paint through the first half en route to 50 on the night. The dominance in the post was due to a combination of sophomore Olivia Canning, first-year Jasmine Sorrels, and reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Abby Andrews who combined for 29 of Oberlin's 68 points.

Andrews, who has had a hot-hand offensively as of late, registered 11 points on 5-of-11 (45.4%) shooting to accompany five rebounds, one block and a steal. Canning finished closely behind with 10 points from 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the floor with nine boards, four blocks and one assist. Sorrells posted eight points (4-of-7; 57.1%), along with fellow rookie Ally Driscoll (3-of-9; 33.3%). Sorrells also posted a career-high 11 rebounds in the win.

Junior Tyler Parlor led the Yeowomen with 12 points on 5-of-11 (45.4%) with seven rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal.

In the opening period, the Yeowomen led by seven, 10-3, but Thiel managed to dial the Oberlin lead to six, 17-11, as the quarter expired.

Thiel got the second quarter rolling with a 9-4 run to trim the Crimson and Gold's advantage back to one, 21-20, at the 5:52 mark. An exchange of baskets kept the contest at a one-point differential, but not for long as the Yeowomen ripped open the score line before the halftime break.

Just over halfway through the second quarter, the Oberlin women busted open the game with a 14-0 run to close the half with a 15-point upperhand, 37-22. In the opening 20-minutes, the Yeowomen dominated play, out-rebounding the Tomcats, 27-14, capitalizing for 10 points off of Thiel give-aways and picking up 26 points in the paint to Thiel's four.

Out of the break, the Crimson and Gold continued to keep a high-tempo, run the floor and found a way to extend their lead to as much as 21-points, 56-35, late in the third quarter. As the Yeowomen maintained their double-digit lead throughout the third stanza, the Tomcats couldn't find an answer defensively and misfired from three-range, hitting only two-of-six from beyond the arch, en route to a 15-point quarter.

The Yeowomen flirted with a 20-point lead the entire fourth quarter until the Tomcats found an offensive rhythm down the stretch, paired with a few missed jumpers from the Crimson and Gold. Thiel's would-be-comeback was too little too late as the Yeowomen closed out the Tomcats to move to 7-11 overall and 2-6 against non-conference opponents.

Oberlin women's basketball will return to the hardwood on Friday, January 28 as they travel north to Kalamazoo College. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
