Oberlin, Ohio – Abby Andrews poured in a career-high 23 points and the Oberlin defense set a single-game school record with 18 blocks as the Oberlin College women's basketball team knocked-off the Denison University Big Red, 47-40, on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen held the Big Red to just 16 second-half points and used a 22-point fourth quarter to complete the series sweep. The win marked the second straight for the Yeowomen as they moved to 6-11 overall and back to an even 5-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Denison dropped to 9-9 and 6-3 in league action.
The Big Red had no answers for Andrews as she finished 8-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. The junior for Ann Arbor, Michigan, added a team-high eight rebounds and four blocks.
Sophomore center
Olivia Canning fought through early foul trouble to post seven points, five rebounds and six blocked shots.
The Yeowomen post players did an outstanding job in shutting down NCAC Player of the Year candidate Jordan Holmes, holding her well below her season averages of 11.9 points and 15 rebounds per game. Holmes, who entered the game needing eight rebounds to set the all-time NCAA Division III record, left Philips Gym with just five boards and nine points.
Oberlin trailed 31-21 with 7:43 left in the third quarter, but the Yeowomen increased their defensive pressure even more as they held the Big Red to nine points the rest of the way. However, Denison still went into the final quarter with a 33-25 lead in hand.
Following a layup from Canning,
Sarah Thompson would cash in three of her seven points to make it a one-possession game with 8:24 left to play.
Thompson's triple-hit was part of a 13-0 Yeowomen run that featured five straight points from Andrews that ultimately put Oberlin out in front for good at 35-33.
Holmes would stop the bleeding with a layup of to cut the Yeowomen cushion down to 38-35, but Andrews answered right back with a bucket of her own.
The 3-pointer from Alison Schafer had the Oberlin advantage down to five with 42 seconds to go, but Andrews would ice the game away with four charity tosses.
The first half was closely contested as no more than five points separated the two foes, but it was the Big Red who went into the intermission with a 24-19 lead.
Emily Krumpe led Denison with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting. As a team, the Big Red shot 26.2 percent with 16 makes on 61 shots.
Oberlin also made 16 field goals – doing so on 43 attempts for a 37.2 percent clip. The Yeowomen also finished 14-of-18 at the free throw line for a 77.8 percent success rate.
The Yeowomen have a short turnaround, as they will step out of conference to host Thiel College on Monday night. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
