Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Earn a Key Road Win at Allegheny

Meadville, PA - Alex Stipano and Olivia Canning each scored 16 points as the Oberlin College women's basketball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Allegheny College Gators, 66-52, on Wednesday evening at the David V. Wise Center.

Canning notched her fifth double-double of the season as she added 10 rebounds to her 7-of-12 shooting performance. Stipano cashed in all four of Oberlin's triples, while Tyler Parlor chipped in with eight points and eight boards in the win. Rookie Sarah Thompson iced the game away at the free throw line, finishing 9-of-10 at the charity stripe for her nine points.

The victory marked the first of the 2017 calendar year for the Yeowomen and snapped a five-game skid in the process as Oberlin moved to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Yeowomen dug themselves a big hole in the early going, scoring just six points through the first 12 minutes of action as the Gators opened up a 22-6 advantage with just over eight minutes left in the first half.

However, the Yeowomen finally found their rhythm and would close the second quarter on a 20-7 run to cut the margin down to 29-26 at the intermission.  A total of six different Yeowomen scored during the spurt with Canning accounting for eight points.

In the third quarter no more than four points would separate the two foes. A Stipano 3-pointer at the 8:24 mark would give Oberlin its first lead since 3-2 in the first quarter as her hit from distance made it 33-31 in favor of the Yeowomen. It would remain nip and tuck for the rest of the period with the Gators ultimately taking a 45-44 lead into the fourth quarter.

A 3-pointer from Allegheny's Emily Smith with 6:53 left in the game increased the Gator lead out to 52-46, but the Yeowomen kept coming. After Ally Driscoll tied the game at 52, a layup from Abby Andrews with 4:26 left on the clock would put the Yeowomen out in front for good as they would never trail the rest of the way as Oberlin's defense would hold the Gators scoreless over the final 6:53 to came away with the win.

A pair of charity tosses from Andrews with 1:08 remaining increased the Yeowomen cushion out to eight, 60-52, and effectively put the game out of reach for the Gators.

The Gators, who shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the floor, dropped to 3-13 and 1-7 in the NCAC. Oberlin shot just 31.3 percent, hitting on 20-of-64 shots. However, the Yeowomen made the Gators pay at the free throw line where they went 22-of-28 (78.6%) compared to Allegheny's 3-of-7 for 42.9 percent.

Oberlin also won the rebounding battle 50-37 and cashed in 25 points off of 21 Allegheny turnovers.

The Yeowomen will return home on Saturday afternoon to host Denison University at 1 p.m.
