GAMBIER, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the second half, scoring just 12 points as they dropped a midweek clash with Kenyon College, 42-31.
Despite rookie
Maggie Gross posting two career-highs against the Ladies, the Yeowomen weren't able to pull out a much needed conference win in Central Ohio.
After trailing by only two at the halftime break, the Yeowomen managed to tally just five points in the third quarter on two layups -- one from
Olivia Canning and another from
Jasmine Sorrells -- and a free throw from Gross to let the Ladies open up the contest.Â
A handful of Oberlin turnovers, offensive miscues and a few three-balls from the Ladies put the Yeowomen behind, 40-24 heading into the final frame.
The Crimson and Gold fell behind by 15, 42-27, their largest deficit of the evening with 6:35 remaining in regulation. Down the stretch, the Yeowomen couldn't find enough offensive traction for a comeback as they drop to 3-4 in league play.
Canning and Gross led the Yeowomen offensively with eight points each. Gross notched a career-high nine rebounds, one block and a steal to accompany her career-best eight points on 3-of-4 (75%) shooting and 2-of-4 (50%) from the line.
Kenyon's Jessica Gerber led all scorers with 10 points on 4-of-8 from the floor, followed by the Ladies' Bailey Dominguez who netted nine on 3-of-8 shooting, including two big three-pointers during Kenyon's crucial third-quarter scoring run.
Canning tallied eight points on 4-of-4 from the floor with two rebounds, and two blocks in just nine minutes of action.
The loss slips the Oberlin women to 4-10 overall as they continue a three-game road skid.
The Yeowomen travel to Greencastle, Indiana on Saturday, January 14 to tussle with the Tigers of DePauw University in the first half of a women's-men's doubleheader.
Tipoff between the Yeowomen and the North Coast Athletic Conference leading and 17th ranked Tigers is slated for 1 p.m.
