Yeowomen Take Two on Saturday

PITTSBURGH - Oberlin College volleyball rallied to capture two victories on Saturday and finish 2-2 in the Steel City.

After surrendering two close matches on Friday night, the Yeowomen battled back in a big way to defeat the Hiram College Terriers in five sets before a swiftly dismissing their hosts, the LaRoche College Redhawks, 3-0.

The Oberlin women quickly secured the first two sets from the Terriers, 25-22, 25-17, before Hiram bit back and held off the sweep.

Hiram took the third set, 25-18, and the fourth, 25-22, to force a fifth set, the second five-setter for the Yeowomen in as many days. Despite handing over the third and fourth set, the Yeowomen abruptly halted the Hiram comeback. Oberlin took the fifth set in commanding fashion, 15-6, to earn head coach Erica Rau's first victory over the Terriers in her six-year tenure.

First-year Lexi Mitchell continues to be an offensive presence as she led the attack with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .361. After a double-digit kill performance last night, Jillian Hostetler followed with 10 more kills against the Terriers. Mitchell also tied a team-high with four service aces. Krista Langhans also tallied four aces along with seven digs against the Terriers.

Senior Meredith Leung and sophomore Sara Chang continued to be vital to the Oberlin attack, sharing responsibility setting up the Yeowomen's offense. Leung finished with 25 assists in the lid-lifter, while Chang collected 24.

Defensively, the charge was led by second-year Emily Kelkar, who finished with 10 digs, followed by Mitchell and Leung who each notched eight.

After taking the Terriers to five sets, the Yeowomen bounced back marvelously to quickly turn away the Redhawks in three sets, 25-23, 25-15, 25-17.

Yeowomen used a team effort in the afternoon victory to out play the Redhawks, hitting .204 compared to La Roche's .086.

Mitchell led the attack once more with eight kills followed by Chang, who rattled off seven. Hostetler, Maggie Middleton and Dana Thomas each claimed six kills in the win.

Leung and Chang closed a stellar opening weekend with 12 and 15 assists, respectively, against La Roche. Chang finished with a team high 78 assists over the weekend, while Leung finished close behind with 70. First-year Samantha Lam made her debut with 22 assists over the four-match weekend.

Mitchell, Middleton, Spencer, Hostetler, Chang and Thomas all finished in double-digits offensively, with Mitchell leading the way with 51 kills. Langhans and Mitchell rattled off eight service aces each to lead the team.

Kelkar was a mainstay defensively, leading the Yeowomen with 41 digs over 17 sets.

The Yeowomen will bring their 2-2 record back to Philips Gymnasium next weekend and continue non-conference action as they host a tri-match. Oberlin volleyball will welcome Notre Dame (OH) College and this weekend's host, La Roche College for a Saturday afternoon rematch.

The Yeowomen open the day with the Falcons at 11 a.m. before the Redhawks take on Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
