UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - Oberlin volleyball fought hard but it wasn't enough to get past John Carroll University as they were defeated in three sets on the east side of Cleveland.
The Yeowomen had trouble finding an offensive rhythm early on and the Blue Streaks did just enough to hold on for the win.
In the opener, the two sides traded points until the Blue Streaks locked the game at 7-7 and proceeded to take the next six points. Oberlin fought to claw back even but the deficit proved too much as the Streaks took the first, 15-25.
Again the two exchanged points early on in the second, but the Streaks used a five-point run to gain the upperhand, 10-5. The Yeowomen managed to trim the deficit to two, 10-8, but John Carroll extended the gap to 12-9 and captured the next seven points.
Trailing 19-9, The Blue Streaks closed out the second to put Oberlin in a 2-0 hole.
The Yeowomen fell behind early in the third, 7-2, and couldn't make up the difference. The Crimson and Gold battled to get back into the match, but at 21-15, the Blue Streaks took the last four points to close out the Thursday night battle.
Senior
Jillian Hostetler led the Yeowomen with nine kills whiel first-year
Lexi Mitchell finished close behind tallying eight kills with attack percentage of .182.
Ave Spencer and
Maggie Middleton each notched four kills in the loss.
Second-year
Sara Chang was the focal point setting up the Oberlin offense, finishing with 19 assists, followed by
Meredith Leung's nine.
Defensively, libero
Emily Kelkar led the effort with 16, followed by
Krista Langhans with eight and Mitchell with five.
The stumble in University Heights drops the Yeowomen below .500 to 3-4 overall as they continue rolling through the non-conference schedule.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday, September 17, when they travel to the College of Wooster to play in the annual Ginny Hunt Invitational.
The Crimson and Gold will take on fellow Ohio Athletic Conference foe Marietta College at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. bout with the University of Pittsburgh Bradford.
