PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - A 14-goal first half drove Oberlin College women's lacrosse past the Ursuline College Arrows in a Saturday afternoon, non-conference affair on the east side of Cleveland.
The win lifts the Yeowomen to 10-5 overall as they remain 4-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with just two league matches remaining. Oberlin women's lacrosse will travel to Allegheny on Wednesday night, before hosting the College of Wooster Fighting Scots in the season finale on Saturday, April 30.
Securing the tenth win of the 2016 campaign at Ursuline marks the second consecutive double-digit win season for the Yeowomen.
As the final stretch of the 2016 regular season draws near, the Yeowomen needed a late season boost and found just that against the Arrows. The Oberlin women outshot the Arrows 31-to-13 including a 27-to-12 differential in shots on goal.
The Yeowomen outworked Ursuline on the draw claiming 13 compared to the Arrows 8, while dominating free-position shots and ground balls, finishing with nine and 14 compared to Ursuline's two and nine.
Oberlin opened the contest with 14 unanswered first-half goals, which spilled over into the second frame and led to a 17-goal run before the Arrows could find an answer defensively. The Ursuline netminder, Sarah Bowerman, finished with eight saves in the game after facing an onslaught in the opening frame.
Her counterpart, Oberlin's junior goalie
Alexa L'Insalata, finished with four first-half saves in the victory before giving way to first-year
Siena Marcelle in the second session. For L'Insalata the performance in the non-conference triumph elevates her season total to 120.
First-year
Hayley Drapkin drew first blood just 45 seconds into the bout followed by
Natalie Rauchle on her way to a five-goal performance.
Maggie Mullard kept Oberlin rolling with two of her own before Rauchle caged her second.
Marissa Maxfield joined the action just before Rauchle and Mullard netted hat-trick-goals. Leading the Arrows 8-0,
Hannah Heinke-Green and Mullard snuck shots around Bowerman to give the Oberlin ladies a double-digit advantage.
Rauchle notched two consecutive goals with the help from
Grace Barlow and Heinke-Green before
Sarah Conner capitalized on a man-up opportunity. Maxfield closed the opening half with a goal at 1:40 to bring the scoreline to 14-0 in favor of Oberlin at the intermission.
Heinke-Green and Drapkin, with an assist from Barlow, took the score to 16-0, before
Sarah Feinberg tallied her first goal of the campaign to close the 17-goal scoring run. The Arrows got on the board for the first time in over 45 minutes of play, but Barlow got it back with her first scores of the game on her way to a four-point performance in Pepper Pike.
Maxfield closed a hat-trick performance with a man-up goal and the Arrows picked up a last second goal to end the day.
Rauchle led the Oberlin offense with five goals on five shots, while Mullard netted four goals on five shots while collecting a team-best five ground balls in the win. Heinke-Green tallied four points with two goals and two assists, while Barlow used her 43rd goal of the year and three assists to register four points, elevating her season total to a team-high 62. Rauchle still leads the Yeowomen in scoring as her five goals against Ursuline moves her season total to 53.Â
Oberlin women's lacrosse returns with the Gators on Wednesday night, April 27. The opening draw from Meadville, Pennsylvania is slated for 5 p.m.
