HIRAM, Ohio - Oberlin College women's lacrosse secured their fourth North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the 2016 campaign, taking down the Hiram College Terriers, 17-6 in a Tuesday afternoon scuffle.
The Oberlin women went ahead early with a commanding 11-goal first half performance. The Terriers would have been held scoreless in the period, but a late goal put the scoreline at 11-1 before the break. The Yeowomen slightly took their foot off the gas offensively, but still notched six second half goals to capture their second consecutive league victory.
Senior
Grace Barlow and sophomore
Natalie Rauchle each hit for four goals against the Terriers to lead the Yeowomen in the win, while junior
Maggie Mullard registered her fifth three-plus goal performance of the season.
The Yeowomen got rolling with 11 unanswered goals to open the game, the first coming from Barlow with just 16 seconds gone. The Yeowomen overcame a man-down when junior
Michaela Puterbaugh collected her fourth score of the year, but not before
Hannah Heinke-Green found the back of the Hiram net.
On top 3-0, Barlow and Rauchle struck for goals within a minute of each other for their 40th and 45th scores of the year. The Yeowomen forged an eight-goal lead 11:30 into the game as Rauchle and Heinke-Green tallied their second of the day and Mullard caged her first goal on her way to a hat-trick.
With 17:30 left in the opening frame, Sloan Garelick registered her third goal of the campaign, flinging a free position shot past Hiram's net minder, Rachel Metcalf. Oberlin's tenth goal of the afternoon came on Mullard's 31st of the year, while the Oberlin scoring fiasco came to a close when Mullard completed her first-half hat-trick with 6:09 remaining.
Hiram's Katelyn Slomovitz snuck the Terries' lone first half goal around Oberlin's senior goalie
Alexa L'Insalata three minutes and 45 seconds before the intermission to stop Oberlin scoring run.
At the half, L'Insalata would be replaced by first-year
Siena Marcelle after five saves in 30 minutes between the pipes. Marcelle cleaned up the Terries in the second half finishing with three saves.
The Oberlin women carried their offensive momentum into the second half netting three goals in the opening 7:04. Barlow, Rauchle and
Sarah Conner snuck shots past Metcalf, and the Terriers's Autumn Osgood tabbed two goals to her name in response.
Osgood cut back the Oberlin lead to 11 with two goals in one minute of play.
Rauchle secured her fourth goal of the game by converting a free position opportunity deep in the offensive end. Following three Hiram goals Barlow equaled Rauchle's four-goal performance by claiming her 41st of the year to move the Yeowomen back to a double-digit lead, 16-6.
As Oberlin was cruising to their ninth triumph of the year, first-year
Hayley Drapkin closed the game with her seventh goal of the year at 1:15.
The Yeowomen played a brilliant game in Hiram, dominating in transition and on the turf. The Oberlin women went 11-of-12 on clear opportunities and scooped up 16 ground ball as a unit, double what the Terries managed.
Rauchle's four-goal showing came on seven shots and the Edina, Minnesota native finished with two groundballs, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Barlow's four scores on five shots were accompanied by two assists, making Barlow the game's top point-getter with six. Barlow also tallied a team-high four draw controls in the win.
Mullard added an assist, one groundball and one draw control to her hat-trick performance, which came off of six shots. Heinke-Green coupled her two goals with two assists, while her two scores marks her second multi-goal game of the year.
Oberlin women's lacrosse returns to competition in their final non-conference matchup of the year on Saturday, April 23.
The Yeowomen will make the short trip to the east side of Cleveland to take on the Ursuline College Arrows. The opening draw in Pepper Pike, Ohio is scheduled for 5 p.m.
