Greencastle, IN – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half to upend the DePauw University Tigers, 13-8, in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
The victory moved the Yeowomen's overall record to 5-3, while the Tigers fell back to 1-7 on the year.
The dynamic scoring combination of
Grace Barlow and
Natalie Rauchle continued to impress as the duo collected eight goals. Barlow now has 28 goals, while Rauchle leads the team with 31.
Oberlin raced out to an early 4-0 lead as
Maggie Mullard and Barlow both cashed in goals prior to back-to-back finishes from senior
Suzanna Doak.
The Tigers would get on the board midway through the opening half, but the Yeowomen would extend their advantage out to 6-1 as sophomore Rauchle notch her first of the game and
Marissa Maxfield would follow with her first of the game with the help of a Doak feed.
However, DePauw came charging back, sending in five of the final six goals of the half to trail just 7-6 at the intermission. Rauchle, who was assisted by Mullard, would send in her second score of the period during the scoring run to keep Oberlin out in front by the slimmest of margins.
The game was nip-and-tuck early in the second half with Barlow and Rauchle scoring in the early portion of the session to keep the Yeowomen out in front 9-7. Barlow would tack on a free-position finish at the 14:46 mark and quickly follow with her fourth goal of the match to increase the lead out to four.
Rauchle would cap off the string of four unanswered goals to make it a 12-7 game before the Tigers' Maryclaire Heldring stopped the scoring run with her sixth goal of the season.
In the closing moments Maxfield would send in her second score of the game and seventh of the season to put an exclamation point on the win.
Junior
Alexa L'Insalata had a strong performance in the cage as she totaled nine saves against 22 shots for a save percentage of 52.9-percent.
The Yeowomen will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they step back out of conference and travel to Otterbein University for 5 p.m. clash.
