Abrahamowicz Notches 100th Career Win as Yeomen Split on Final Day in Arizona

Final Spring Break Stats (16 Games)

Tucson, AZ – Head Coach Adrian Abrahamowicz earned his 100th career win as the Oberlin College baseball team defeated Middlebury College 5-3 in game two after falling 8-4 in the opener on Saturday afternoon in Tucson, Arizona.

Junior left-hander Charlie Goetz earned the win as he twirled 4.1 innings, allowing just one earned run (two total) and five hits.

Junior Justin Cruz, who is riding an eight-game hitting streak, put the Yeomen out in front in the home-half of the second with a two-out three-run double. He now heads home leading the team in batting average (.480), hits (24), runs (16), RBI (13), and total bases (32).

The Panthers took advantage of a defensive miscue to extend the top of the third inning and push across their first run of the game. Oberlin would get it back though as freshman Isaac Goldman roped an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 4-1 Yeomen lead after three complete.

Middlebury put some pressure back on the Yeomen in the fifth, plating a pair on three hits and an error. However, freshman reliever Jack Reiss was able to induce a fly out to leave two runners stranded and keep Oberlin in the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth Jake Reynolds would tack on a big insurance run, sending a two-out RBI single to left field to score John Evans.

Reiss worked a perfect 1-2-3 sixth before giving way to rookie classmate Noah Gear in the seventh. He would go on to lock down his second save in as many days. He pitched around a walk and a wild-pitch strikeout that put two runners on, but neither player got past second base.

Reynolds finished with two hits in the game, as did sophomore Quin Butler who went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

In game one sophomore ace Sean Kiley did not have his best stuff, but still fought through 4.1 innings and struck out seven. However, he was ultimately touched up for eight runs on eight hits and two walks.

The Panthers set the tone with four runs over the first two innings before the Yeomen finally broke through with a pair of runs in the fifth. Evans, who was 3-for-3 in the game, started the inning with a single to right center and would come around to score on a double down the left field line by Cruz. Freshman Ian Dinsmore then plated with an opposite-field double down the right field line to make it a 4-2 game.

However, the momentum was short-lived as Middlebury answered right back with four runs in the inning as two Yeomen errors and three hits resulted in the crooked number.

The Yeomen continued to fight as they scored a pair in the sixth as Cruz drew a bases-loaded walk and Brian Carney had an RBI groundout. However, the final outcome was never in jeopardy.

Cruz and Dinsmore each had two hits in the setback.

Oberlin returns home having gone 7-9 on the trip and is now 7-11 overall on the season.

The Yeomen will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host local rival John Carroll University in a single nine-inning game at 4 p.m.
