Tucson, AZ – Behind a strong pitching performance from junior southpaw
Kyle Dominy, the Oberlin College baseball defeated the Hamline University 7-5 in game one, but the Pipers got their revenge with an 8-3 win in the backend of the twinbill on Friday afternoon.
The win marked Dominy's second of the trip and moved his overall record to 2-1 on the season. He worked six innings allowing, five hits and three earned runs (five total). He struck out six and walked three.
The Yeomen pounded out six hits through the first two innings but had just three runs to show for it as poor base running short-circuited two potential rallies in the early going.
However,
Mike Masella,
Brian Carney and
Blaise Dolcemaschio each had RBI's in the second inning to give Dominy an early lead.
Nonetheless, The Pipers would get right back to even in the top of third at 3-3 as a Yeomen error coupled with a pair of hits led to the crooked number for Hamline.
Oberlin would go back in front for good in the home-half of the fourth as Carney roped an RBI double that short-hoped the wall in right to plate
Darren Zaslau. Rookie
Ian Dinsmore, who went 3-for-3 with a walk in the game, followed with an RBI single of his own. Dolcemashio later notched his second RBI of the game on a groundout to first base.
Dominy ran into some trouble in the fifth as the Pipers got back within one by plating a pair. However, he registered one of his six punchouts when he needed it most, sitting down Rick Tormey to end the inning and leave a pair of runners stranded in scoring position.
The Yeomen would add an important insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Carney came through with a clutch two-out single to left that sent Masella across the dish for his third hit and third RBI of the game.
In the sixth, Dominy would induce three fly ball outs after surrendering a lead-off single and freshman
Noah Gear worked the seventh to lock down his first collegiate save – doing so in just six pitches as he got three fly-ball outs to secure the Yeomen victory.
The Yeomen had 14 hits in the game with
Justin Cruz and Masella each recording a pair to accompany the three-hit efforts of Carney and Dinsmore.
In the nightcap the Yeomen defense failed rookie left-hander starter
David Gaetano in the early going as three errors in the first two innings resulted in four unearned runs for the Pipers.
Oberlin cut the lead in half in the top of the third as the Carney-Dinsmore show continued to impress. Cruz jumped started the two-out rally with a single and would come around to score on Carney's opposite field double down the left field line. Dinsmore and Carney would then trade places as he lifted a double to the gap in right center to make it 4-2.
Hamline would add a single tally in the fifth before breaking the game open with a three-run sixth.
Dinsmore's would add an RBI groundout for the Yeomen in the seventh, but it was too little too late for any potential comeback.
Gaetano was ultimately the tough-luck loser as he sprinkled seven hits over 4.2 innings of work while fanning six and walking two. Of the five runs scored on his account, just one was earned.
Nolan Schoonveld went all seven innings for the Pipers, allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned).
Oberlin will conclude its spring break slate tomorrow with a doubleheader against Middlebury College. First pitch of game one is set for 11 a.m. MST / 2 p.m. EDT.
