Hastings Halts Yeomen’s Win Streak at Four

Stats From the Trip (8 Games)

Tucson, AZ - The Oberlin College baseball team entered Tuesday riding a four-game winning streak, but that was quickly put to an end as the Hastings College (NE) Broncos swept the Yeomen by the scores of 11-6 and 23-3.

Game one was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded. However, a critical Oberlin error allowed the go-ahead run to score and Lucas Lingreen then followed with a three-run triple to make matters much worse for the Yeomen.

The Yeomen defense committed four miscues in the game, resulting in just three of the 11 runs scored by the Broncos being earned.

Junior Charlie Goetz made his first-career start on the mound and got through four innings as he sprinkled eight hits and four runs (three earned). Hastings went on to score seven runs off the Yeomen bullpen - all of which were unearned.

Freshman Brendan Mapes stayed red hot as he was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Jack Brewster added two hits and two runs-batted-in, while junior Justin Cruz also had two hits to go along with two runs scored.

The Broncos led 3-1 after two full innings, but the Yeomen would even the score in the top half of the third. Cruz, Ian Dinsmore and Mapes started the inning with three straight hits to plate the first run and Brewster followed with an RBI groundout.

Oberlin took control of the game, plating three more runs in the fourth to go up 6-3. Rookie Isaac Goldman, who made his first-career start at catcher and had two extra-base hits, belted a triple and would later score Brian Hemmert's single through the left side. With two on and two out, Mapes delivered once again, lifting a looping single inside the right field foul line to plate a pair.

In the home half of the fifth, Hastings would take advantage of a defensive miscue to score a pair and cut the deficit down to one, 6-5. Oberlin went quietly in the top of the sixth and in the bottom of the inning is when everything came unglued.

Game two was one that Yeomen will have to erase from their minds quickly as the Broncos touched up Oberlin's pitching for 19 hits while also drawing 13 walks.

Hastings scored 10 runs in the first three innings and never looked backed en route to the sweep to run their record to 5-20. The Yeomen dropped back to 4-6 overall and 4-4 on the trip.

Senior Blaise Dolcemaschio went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the loss and classmate Daniel Becker also added an RBI groundout.

Senior Tristam Osgood, who appeared in both games, was the most effective Yeomen reliever as he worked a clean sixth inning.

The Yeomen will be back in action tomorrow with a split doubleheader against Lewis & Clark and Williams College. First pitch against the Pioneers is set for 1:30 p.m. MST / 4:30 p.m. EDT. The Yeomen and Ephs will then do battle at 5 p.m. MST/ 8 p.m. EDT. Both games will be nine innings.
