Tucson, AZ - The Oberlin College baseball team swept Colby College, earning an 8-1 win in eight innings in game one before securing a 12-5 triumph in the nightcap.
In the lid-lifter
Sean Kiley was simply masterful on the mound through six-plus innings and the Yeomen offense finally broke through in the top of the eighth in the win. Kiley allowed just three hits and two walks while keeping the Colby hitters at bay. He also punched out six to run his season total to 14 in 11 innings of work and has not allowed an earned run in his two appearances thus far.
Unfortunately for him, he did not get the win as he departed in the top of the seventh after giving up a lead-off double to Dan Csaplar and he would later score on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
However, the Yeomen offense would atone for the miscue in the top of the eighth, erupting for seven runs in the inning to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Jake Reynolds,
Colin Brown,
Mike Masella,
Sam Harris (2) and
Jack Brewster all had RBIs in the barrage.
Sophomore
Milo Sklar, who entered in the seventh in relief of Kiley, struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to seal the Yeomen's first victory of the season while also earning his first win of the season.
Rookie
Ian Dinsmore started his five-hit day, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored while junior
Brian Carney also had two of the Yeomen's 13 hits in the game.
It was zeros across the board for both sides through five innings as the Mules' Soren Hansen was matching Kiley out-for-out. The Yeomen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth as senior co-captain
Blaise Dolcemaschio delivered RBI single to center to score Dinsmore.
In the nightcap the Yeomen spotted the Mules four runs through the first three innings, but the Yeomen battled back to with 12 unanswered runs over the next four innings.
Oberlin used five hits and a Colby error to plate five runs in the home-half of the third to take the lead 5-4.
Quin Butler got the rally going with a run-scoring bases-loaded single to left center. Reynolds also had an RBI single in the inning before fellow freshman
Isaac Goldman came through with a clutch two-out two-run single back up the box to put the Yeomen out in front.
Dinsmore would add an RBI single in the fourth and the Yeomen would bust the game open with a four-run fifth. Reynolds roped an RBI triple to left center and later come around to score. Sophomore
Derek Martin would then follow with a key two-out two-RBI double to left that sent
John Evans and
Brian Hemmert across the dish.
The Yeomen continued to pour it on, adding two more tallies in the sixth to cap their scoring as sophomore
Darren Zaslau came through with an RBI double before Reynolds came across on a groundout by Goldman.
The Yeomen bullpen was impressive, allowing just two hits and one run over four innings of work.
Joe Greenberg got the win in relief of starter
Macabe Camps. He,
Nicholas Morgan, and
Julian Sawhill also worked perfect innings.
The Yeomen, who are now 2-4 on the season, will take on Carleton College tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. EDT.
