OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's lacrosse remained unbeaten as they dropped their cross-town, OAC foe Baldwin Wallace University, 15-10, in the 2016 home opener.
The Yeowomen continued to showcase their high-powered offense on Wednesday night underneath the lights of the Bailey Field. In the first half, the Oberlin women went 15-of-15 in shots on goal, netting 11 goals in the opening 30-minute frame.
The Yellow Jackets drew first blood just 51 seconds in, but senior
Grace Barlow pulled the match back to even less than 20 seconds later and classmate
Suzanna Doak earned Oberlin's first advantage of the game at 27:11.
An equalizer from Baldwin Wallace led to
Maggie Mullard snapping in the third Oberlin goal. Trailing 3-2, the Yellow Jackets snuck another shot past Oberlin goalie
Alexa L'Insalata, knotting the match at three goals apiece.
With the game deadlocked and over 10 minutes gone in the half, Mullard caged the first of six unanswered Oberlin goals.
Sara Phister followed with her first of the night, before
Natalie Rauchle rattled in two consecutive scores at within a minute of play. Phister notch her second of the game before Mullard closed the scoring run with her hat-trick goal with 10:29 remaining in the half.
BWU's Hannah Albrechta banged home two goals to make the score 9-4 in the Yeowomen's favor. To close the opening stanza, Rauchle netted her third and fourth goals of the half to give the Oberlin women an 11-4 lead at the intermission.
The Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room and quickly knocked through two unanswered goals and appeared to begin to mount a comeback, but the Yeowomen remained resilient and answered in the form of first-year
Jenna Butler's first collegiate goal at the 22:15 mark.
With another BW goal, the Oberlin lead was cut to four, 12-8, but Phister flung home her third of the night. The Jackets made every attempt to erase the Oberlin lead with two more goals, but Rauchle closed the game with her 10th and 11th of the season to send the Yeowomen to a five-point victory on a chilly night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Rauchle led the Yeowomen's scoring effort for the second consecutive time with six goals on seven shots and an assist to finish as the game's top point-getter.
Barlow only collected one goal, but helped out the offensive cause with a game-high three assists. Both Phister and Mullard tallied hat-tricks in the win.
Between the pipes, L'Insalata closed the 60-minute affair with 15 saves and was credited with her second victory of the year.
The Yeowomen will take a break from battling Ohio Athletic Conference opponents to take on Sewanee: The University of the South this coming Saturday, March 5 with the College of Wooster serving as the host. Action from Wooster, Ohio is slated for noon.
