Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Yeowomen Hold Off Sewanee to Remain Unbeaten

WOOSTER, Ohio - Oberlin College women's lacrosse traveled to the College of Wooster and took down 2015 NCAA Tournament participants Sewanee: The University of the South in a Saturday afternoon, neutral site matchup.

Oberlin simply over-powered and out-performed the Tigers in the first 30-minute frame, taking a 6-1 lead into the halftime break. The two sides combined for 17 goals in the second, but the Yeowomen's advantage was too great of an obstacle for Sewanee to overcome.

Once more, the Yeowomen opened the game with an offensive charge to take a commanding early lead. Over a minute into the battle, Sara Phister caged her first of the game and seventh of the year, followed by scores from leading-scorer Natalie Rauchle and Maggie Mullard on a player-down opportunity.

Mullard quickly doubled-up to extend the Oberlin lead to 4-0 with a little help from Hannah Heinke-Green.

The Tigers finally answered with their first of the day, but Rauchle began another three goal-scoring run for the Yeowomen. Rauchle's second of the game led to Mullard completing her hat-trick and knocking through her fourth of the day to lift the Oberlin women to a 7-1 advantage early in the second half.

The Tigers notched two scores to pull within four, 7-3, but Phister found the back of the Sewanee net on a player-up opportunity to temporarily delay a scoring run from the Tigers.

Three unanswered goals from Sewanee pulled the game to 8-6 in Oberlin's favor and appeared to be the spark needed to ignite a Sewanee comeback. However, the Yeowomen swiftly halted the Tigers momentum when Rauchle initiated a spurt of five unanswered Oberlin goals in nearly five and a half minutes.

Rauchle's 14th of the year with 13:54 remaining was closely followed by three goals from senior captain Grace Barlow in the span of 2 minutes and 8 seconds.

Fellow fourth-year Suzanna Doak knocked through her lone tally of the game to lengthen the Yeowomen lead to 13-6.

Goals from Phister an Mullard wedged in between three Sewanee scores closed the non-conference matchup and lifted the Yeowomen to their third consecutive triumph of the 2016 campaign.

Against the Tigers, Mullard and Phister were the top point-getters with five each. Mullard's came from five goals on nine shots, while scooping up five groundballs and two draw controls. Phister split her points on three goals on eight shots and two assists with two groundballs and five draw controls.

For the third straight game, Rauchle tickled the twine three or more times, while finishing with a game-high six draw controls against the Tigers. Barlow's hat-trick came off of five shots, and she helped out the winning effort with two groundballs.

In goal, senior netminder Alexa L'Insalata had another brilliant performance, collecting her third victory between the pipes. In Wooster, L'Insalata finished with nine stops, pushing her season total to 28.

The Oberlin offense has been white hot in their first three bouts, tallying 51 goals on 108 shots, while remaining dangerously accurate with 92 shots on goal compared to their opponent's 53. The Yeowomen are averaging 17 goals per game, while holding opponents to an average 7.67 scores per contest.

The Yeowomen have certainly capitalized on early scoring opportunities and has been pushing the offensive tempo early on, netting 30 goals in the first half, compare to 21 in the final 30 minutes.

The Yeowomen will return to action as they take on the University of Mount Union, their second of three Ohio Athletic Conference opponents. The Purple Raiders will invade the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex this coming Wednesday, March 9.
