Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Concordia (WI) University Falcons to open spring break on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Yeomen were bested 8-2 in the lid-lifter and went on to fall 12-5 in the nightcap.
Senior
Harrison Wollman got the start in game one and battled his way through five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and five walks. He struck out six, but still suffered his second loss the season.
The Falcons touched up Wollman for three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning with Brad Jacob's two-out RBI double to right center being the big hit of the inning.
Oberlin got on the board in the bottom of the second as rookie
Jake Reynolds roped a triple to right field and would score on an RBI groundout by
Brian Carney.
However, Concordia broke the game open in the top of the third with another three-run inning. CUW had just one hit in the frame but a walk, hit-by-pitch and an error all proved costly for the Yeomen.
Oberlin's final run of the game came in the home-half of the fifth as
Mike Masella singled to center and would later score from first base on a two-out double to the gap in left center by
Sam Harris. The sophomore from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, finished 3-for-4 at the plate in the game.
The Falcons would go on to post single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings to reach the game's final outcome. The Yeomen used five relief pitchers out of the bullpen with freshmen
Zachary Steer and
Jack McGowan making their collegiate debuts as they each worked a third of an inning.
In game two the Falcons Tyler Gross had a perfect game going through 4.1 innings before the Yeomen finally broke through, but the Falcons had already pushed across six runs against freshman right-hander
Jack Reiss in his collegiate debut.
Jack Brewster, who had two hits in the game, ended the perfection from Gross with a single. Rookie
Brendan Mapes and senior
Brian Hemmert followed with singles of their own to load the bases. Senior
John Evans then delivered a bouncing-ball single over the third baseman's head to plate a pair of runs. The rally continued with a run-scoring single back up the middle by
Justin Cruz.
Unfortunately, the momentum was short-lived, as the Falcons would answer back with a single tally in the bottom of the fifth before putting the game away for good with a five-run sixth.
Oberlin would also score a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Following a two-out double from Brewster, Mapes singled back up the middle to score him. In the seventh, Cruz and Harris both singled and pinch runner
Nathaniel Wehr would later score on a CUW error.
Reiss lasted 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs. He struck out two and walked two in the loss. First-years
Noah Gear and
Alexander Amorello also made their first-career appearances out of the Yeomen bullpen.
Oberlin will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. MST / 1 p.m. EDT in a doubleheader against Colby College.
