Yeowomen Can’t Keep Up With Blue Streaks

OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's lacrosse dropped their second contest of the season to the John Carroll University Blue Streaks, 21-18, in an offensive fiasco underneath the lights of Bailey Field.

Wednesday night's thriller was far from the 9-8 defeat the Yeowomen suffered against OAC power Mount Union a week ago as both team's combined for 63 shots. Against the Blue Streaks, the Oberlin finished with 33 shots, while JCU topped out at 30 shots, but were deadly accurate with 29 shots on goal.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half as both team's found goals early and often.

The Blue Streaks drew first blood just seconds in to the matchup, but Maggie Mullard and Suzanna Doak answered quickly for the Oberlin women to grab a 2-1 lead. The Blue Streaks then rattled off two goals in the span of 29 seconds to go up 3-2. Mullard caged her second of the night to lock the game at 3-3, but not for long.

Each team found a goal with free position shots, one from JCU's Gina Vilsack and from Oberlin first-year Hayley Drapkin, to push the score line to 4-4. John Carroll then knocked through four unanswered-goals to grab an 8-4 advantage with under 10 minutes remaining in the first frame.

Natalie Rauchle ended the Oberlin drought with a goal off of a free-position shot, but the Streak's Jillian Millard snuck in JCU's ninth goal of the half. Trailing 9-5 with 6:04 left in the first, Grace Barlow ignited an offensive spurt to pull the Yeowomen back into the game.

Barlow flung in two consecutive goals, followed by Rauchle's second and third of the evening to knot the score at 9-9 at the intermission.

The difference maker was four goals from John Carroll in the opening 1:57 of the second half. The four-goal surge proved too much for the Yeowomen to overcome, even after gaining offensive momentum later in the second half.

Down 14-9, Doak netted her seventh goal of the year, by the Blue Streaks fought back with two quick, unanswered goals.

Down six, 16-10, the Yeowomen fought hard, but just couldn't claw back from their deficit. Despite four goals from Barlow, two from Rauchle and another from Drapkin and Doak, in the closing 21 minutes, the Blue Streaks held off the Yeowomen to hand them their second setback of the year.

Senior goalie Alexa L'Insalata had a touch night in net as she was berated by Blue Streak attackers. She finished with four saves and took the loss, her second of the year. First-year Siena Marcelle relieved L'Insalata in the second half and got 25-plus minutes in goal against the Streaks. Marcelle closed the game with four saves as well.

The Yeowomen will attempt to rebound on Monday, March 21, as they will take on State University of New York-New Paltz in Memphis, Tennessee. After their battle with SUNY New Paltz, the Yeowomen will remain in The Volunteer State to take on Rhodes College on Wednesday.

Action between the Oberlin women and SUNY New Platz is slated for 4 p.m. on Monday.
