Springfield, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team locked up the No. 5 seed in the NCAC Tournament by closing out the regular season with a 57-48 win at Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon.
The victory marks the second straight for the Yeowomen, who close the regular season at 12-13 overall and 6-10 in the NCAC. The Tigers and Hiram College Terriers also matched Oberlin at 6-10 in conference play, but by virtue of the Yeowomen's 3-1 combined record against the two foes, they earned the tiebreaker and thus the highest seed of the trio.
Sophomore
Abby Andrews led the Oberlin attack with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added five rebounds and three assists. Classmate
Tyler Parlor finished with her third double-double of the season, netting 10 points and 14 rebounds. It is her fifth straight game with double-digit rebounds and 10
th of the season.
Senior
Caroline Hamilton added nine points on an efficient 3-of-5 shooting.
The Tigers raced out to an 8-0 lead before the Yeowomen got on the board on an Andrews' layup three minutes into the period. A stick-back layup from
Anna Moore cut the Tigers' advantage down to one, 11-10, with 1:22 left in the frame, but They ultimately still held a 16-12 cushion after one quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, a 3-pointer from Hamilton put Oberlin out in front for the first time of the game at 21-20. The Yeowomen held the Tigers to just eight points in the quarter and took a 27-24 lead into the locker room.
With 3:42 left in the third, Oberlin extended the lead out to out eight, 35-27, on
Olivia Canning's layup, but the Tigers fought back to within three and trailed 38-34 going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was nip-and-tuck as Wittenberg got within two on five different occasions, but not once did Oberlin ever surrender the lead. Sidney Mayle's layup at the 4:20 mark made it 48-46, but neither team scored for the next three minutes until Andrews finally broke the drought with 80 seconds left. Oberlin would go on to ice the game by making 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
The Yeowomen shot 45.1-percent (23-of-51) in the win, while the Tigers checked in at 35.2-percent (19-of-54). Oberlin won the battle of the boards 41-27 and also out-scored Wittenberg 40-24 in the paint.
Oberlin will travel to the fourth-seeded Gators on Tuesday night. Tip-time will be at 7:30 p.m.
