Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen’s Season Ends at No. 4 Allegheny

Meadville, PA - An off-shooting night coupled with Allegheny's stifling defensive pressure resulted in the fourth-seeded Gators defeating the fifth-seeded Oberlin College women's basketball team, 58-50, on Tuesday night in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

The Yeowomen, who lost to Allegheny three times this season, shot just 29-percent (18-of-62), which included a subpar 4-of-21 (19%) showing from beyond the arc. Oberlin was also pressured into 22 turnovers, which translated into 23 points for the Gators. The Yeowomen finished with nine points off of 14 Gator miscues.

Senior Lindsey Bernhardt was the lone Yeowoman in double figures as she netted 13 points, but on just 3-of-17 shooting. She ends her four-year career with 1,224 points, which ranks seventh on the all-time scoring list.

Olivia Canning added nine points off the bench on 4-of-8 shooting, while Caroline Hamilton chipped in with seven. Tyler Parlor continued her string of double-digit rebound performances with 12 boards to accompany her six points.

The first quarter was a seesaw battle with the Yeowomen taking a slim 14-13 lead into the second. Midway through the quarter, a layup from Katie Lucaites and reverse lay-in from Briana Santiago had Oberlin out in front 18-17, but the Gators would close the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 27-20 cushion into the intermission.

The Yeowomen shot just 26.7-percent (8-of-30) in the opening half while both teams combined to go 2-of-19 from 3-point range. Oberlin's 13 turnovers in the session also resulted in 16 first-half points for the Gators.

To start the third quarter, Oberlin quickly got back into the game, shrinking the deficit down to two, 29-27, on Canning's put-back layup. However, the Gators regained control of the game with an 11-2 run over the next 3:30 to take a 40-29 lead, but the Yeowomen did find a way to get back into single digits going in the fourth at 44-36.

Early in the final period Oberlin got back to within four, 44-40, but Jessica Mrdjenovich responded with a big 3-pointer that went towards her game-high 18 points. Deeper into the stanza, Bernhardt's second triple-hit of the quarter had Oberlin back to within five, 51-46, with 2:33 left to play.

Later trailing by nine, the Yeowomen fought to the very end - getting a four-point trip down the floor with 40 seconds to go. Bernhardt hit the first of two free throws and off her miss, Lucaites got the ball back out to Hamilton for a three to cut it to five at 55-50. However, Oberlin was forced to foul and the Gators made three of four charity tosses to ice the game.

Oberlin ends it season with an overall record of 12-14, while the Gators move on to the NCAC semifinals at 14-12.
