OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball closed the home portion of the 2015-16 campaign with a thrilling, 62-56, victory over the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops on Senior Night.
Pre-game, the Yeowomen celebrated the careers of seniors
Lindsey Bernhardt,
Caroline Hamilton and
Katie Lucaites as they played their final contest inside Philips Gymnasium.
Bernhardt opened the night with her 200th career three-pointer en route to a 15-point, 6-rebound send-off performance.
Sophomore
Abby Andrews followed Bernhardt as the only other Yeowomen in double-figures with 12 points of her own. Andrews finished 4-of-13 (30.8%) from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe with four boards, two assists and two blocks.
Lucaites closed her career with a solid performance on Wednesday night with four points (2-of-5; 40%) and six rebounds - marking her third-best total of the year.
In the paint, first-year
Olivia Canning helped free up space for the rest of the post players as she came off the bench and registered her third double-double of the year. Canning finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting (55.5%) and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also finished with five rejections in the win, extending her single-season school-record total to 82.
The Yeowomen's leading rebounder,
Tyler Parlor eclipsed the 200 mark for the season with 10 boards to accompany her eight points on a 4-of-9 (44.4%) performance from the floor.
The first quarter opened with both offenses jumping out to hot starts. There were five lead changes in the opening frame as the two sides went into the second quarter with Oberlin on top 17-16. Eleven of the Yeowomen's points in the first were courtesy of Bernhardt who shot 4-of-10 out of the gate.
Four ties and five more lead changes were had in the second period as the back-and-fourth first half continued. Oberlin took a two-point lead into the final two minutes of the half, but two huge three-balls from the Bishops sent them to a four-point lead, 33-29, at the intermission.
Out of the break, Ohio Wesleyan maintained their advantage until the closing seconds of the third quarter. OWU worked to their largest lead of nine-points, 42-33, with 5:40 left in third quarter. Trailing by the largest deficit of the game, the Yeowomen caught fire and played stifling defense to close the 10-minute stanza.
The Yeowomen composed a 15-3 scoring run to close the third on top, 46-45, with the help of buckets from Canning, Parlor and
Anna Moore off the bench.
Ahead by one moving into the closing frame, the Yeowomen kept the offensive pressure high and staved off any would-be-Bishops comeback. The closest OWU would come to overturning the Oberlin advantage was a two-point deficit with 2:33 remaining. Down the stretch, the Yeowomen would catapult back to an eight-point lead to close the game and take a home win into the 2015-16 season finale.
Possession was key in the win over the Bishops as the Yeowomen set a season-low with 11 turnovers.
The win pulls the Yeowomen out of a six-game slide and takes them to 11-13 overall and 5-10 in league play. The Wednesday victory also provides momentum heading into the season finale at Wittenberg this Saturday.
The Yeowomen and Tigers are slated to tipoff at 2 p.m. in Springfield, Ohio.
