Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Top Gators as Ollie Surpasses a Thousand Points

Meadville, PA - The Oberlin College men's basketball team was able to halt its three-game losing streak by defeating the Allegheny College Gators, 74-56, on Wednesday night at the David V. Wise Center.

Senior center Randy Ollie finished with nine points, but he needed just four to become the 23rd player in program history to reach 1,000 career-points. He now sits at 1,005 over his four-year career.

However, it was junior guard Jack Poyle who led the Yeomen tonight with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Freshman Eli Silverman-Lloyd also impressed with 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 showing, while Scott Miller added 10 points off the bench, as the marksman was 4-of-6 from the floor.

Oberlin started the game up 14-4, but the Gators battled back to within two, 18-16, midway through the opening half. It was later a 20-19 game, but Oberlin would increase that slim margin with a 10-0 spurt that was capped off by a Miller 3-pointer with 3:07 left in the frame.

However, the Gators had a little rebuttal of their own to close out the first half, shrinking the Yeomen lead down to just four, 34-30, going into the locker room at the break.

Billy Urso's 3-pointer at the 16:22 mark tied the game at 40, but a 14-2 Yeomen run put them comfortably back out in front, 54-42, with 9:10 left to play. A traditional 3-point play by Ollie increased the Oberlin cushion out to 16, 64-48, with 3:30 remaining on the clock and the lead would only increase from there to as the final outcome was never in doubt.

With the win the Yeomen improved to 12-10 overall and 7-8 in the NCAC. Allegheny is now 3-19 and 3-12 in league play.

Oberlin shot a blistering 56.9 percent in the win, hitting 29 of the 51 shots it hoisted on the night, including a 9-of-21 (42.9%) performance from beyond the arc. The Gators finished at just 38.5 percent (20-of-52) in the loss.

The Yeomen will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Hiram College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m.
