Yeomen Let One Slip Away in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, CA - The Oberlin College men's basketball team led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but they couldn't make it stand up as the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz rallied to knockoff the Yeomen, 67-60, on New Year's Eve at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

Playing in front of his hometown faithful, senior Nathan Cohen led the Yeomen with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Senior Jack Poyle added nine points, while Joshua Friedkin and Scott Miller chipped in with eight points each.

Both teams were feeling each other out in the early going, but the Yeomen were able to create some separation midway through the opening half. The score was even at 13 with 13:37 left in the stanza, but the Yeomen would catch fire, using a 15-2 run to open up a 28-15 lead with just over five minutes left in the frame. The spurt featured five points from both Poyle and Miller.

However, the Banana Slugs would answer back and shrink the Yeomen cushion down to just six, 32-26, heading into the halftime intermission.

Early in the second half a Eli Silverman-Lloyd triple-hit gave the Yeomen a 39-32 advantage, but UCSC would answer back to claim its first lead since the 16:40 mark of the first half, using a 9-0 run over the next four minutes.

Oberlin would go back out in front for a brief moment, but a pair of Andrew Marrow charity tosses with 9:09 left to play made it a 47-46 edge for the Banana Slugs and they would never trail again as they led by as many as 11 with the Yeomen getting no closer than four over the final eight minutes.

Four Banana Slugs finished in double figures, led by a game-high 13 points from Kyle Creighton. It was a tale of two halves shooting wise for UCSC as they went 7-of-27 (25.9%) in the first half, but cashed in at a 50 percent (13-of-26) rate in the second session.

Oberlin shot 41.8 percent in the setback with 23 makes on 55 attempts, which included a 9-of-29 (31%) showing from 3-point land.

The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 1-9 on the year while the Banana Slugs moved to 7-9.

Oberlin returns home to host Wittenberg University on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
