Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Andrews Leads Yeowomen at WPI

WORCESTER, Ma. - Junior Abby Andrews tallied 10 points in the opening bout of the WPI Holiday Tournament but it wasn't enough as the hosts bested Oberlin College women's basketball, 51-37.

From the jump, it was a back and forth affair in the tip-off matchup. The Crimson and Gold gave WPI all they could handle in the first half to pull even at the break. The Engineers composed a second-half comeback to move into the finals of the holiday invite and drop the Yeowomen to 3-6 overall, 0-4 against non-conference opponents.

Andrews posted 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting to go along with six rebounds and one assist to lead the Yeowomen. Her effort against the Engineers makes her the top scorer on the team with 85 points thus far. Fellow junior Tyler Parlor registered seven points with a 2-of-8 performance from the floor.

In the first half, the Yeowomen finished 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the field with Olivia Canning leading the way with four points and five boards. She would finish with seven rebounds to lead the team. WPI landed 10-of-30 (30%) in the opening half and the teams shared a 23-23 tie at the intermission.

Out of the break, the Engineers manufactured a 14-5 run through the third period to captured their largest lead to that point. Trailing by nine, 37-28, entering the fourth quarter, the Yeowomen fired back with a three-pointer from Alex Stipano en route to a six-point performance (2-of-7; 28.5%), but sputtered offensively as regulation expired. WPI quickly answered and cruised in the fourth as the Oberlin offense cooled off.

The Yeowomen shot 4-24 (16.6%) in the second half to allow the Engineers to pull away. WPI's Ama Biney led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-14, followed by Priscilla Dunphy with 14 on 5-of-20 from the field.

The Crimson and Gold finished 14-of-42 (33.3%) from the floor and 3-of-8 (37.5%) from beyond the arc, compared to WPI's 21-of-55 (38.2%) from the field. However, WPI ended 0-for-9 from 3-point range.

The Yeowomen will conclude the WPI Holiday Tournament tomorrow as they take on Bridgewater State University. Tip-off between the Yeowomen and Bears is slated for 1 p.m.
