Yeowomen Best Bears to Ring in New Year

WORCESTER, Ma. - Oberlin College women's basketball rang in the New Year with a wire-to-wire win over the Bridgewater State University Bears to claim third at the WPI Holiday Tournament and move to 4-6 heading into 2017.

After dropping 10 points in the loss to WPI last night, junior Abby Andrews followed with a game-high 16 against the Bears to earn All-Tournament Team honors. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native combined for 26 points, 7.5 rebounds per game, two assists and three blocks to garner all-tournament laurels. Against the Bears, Andrews posted her 16 points on 8-of-11 (72.7%) shooting to go along with nine boards, two blocks and an assist.

Second-year Olivia Canning was a big help offensively, posting 10 points off of a 4-for-4 performance from the field while hitting on 2-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Sudbury, Massachusetts, native nearly racked up a double-double with nine rebounds, which she coupled with two assists and two rejections.

Junior Tyler Parlor was the most active player on the glass, finishing with a game- and season-high 13 rebounds to accompany her nine points on 4-of-6 (66.6%). Alex Stipano matched Parlor with nine points on three triple-hits to go along with three rebounds, three takeaways and two assists.

The Yeowomen found their offensive groove early and never looked back, outscoring Bridgewater State, 19-10, in the opening frame. The Crimson and Gold played stifling defense in the second quarter, holding the Bears to just five points in the period. The Yeowomen dropped 18 points on the Bears to take a 37-15 lead into the locker room at the half.

Kerry Jenkins' crew didn't slow down out of the intermission, increasing the cushion out to as many as 31 with 3:10 left in the third. The Bears closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, but the Yeowomen still held a 48-25 advantage. Down the stretch, the Oberlin women mustered just nine points in the fourth but the Bears couldn't overcome the double-digit deficit and the Yeowomen cruised to their fourth win of the year.

Offensively, the Yeowomen were guided by the starting five of Sarah Thompson, Andrews, Stipano, Parlor and Canning, who combined for 47 points on 20-of-38 (28.5%) shooting. As a unit, the Crimson and Gold shot 25-of-49 (51%) from the field, but struggled a bit from beyond the arc, firing 4-of-14 (28.6%) and 3-of-8 (37.5%) from the line.

Defensively, Jenkin's crew didn't allow the Bears to ever find their rhythm as Bridgewater finished 16-of-66 (24.2%) from the floor and 8-of-34 (23.5%) from 3-point range and only got to the line once.

The win earns the Yeowomen third at the holiday invite and moves them to 4-6 overall, marking the first triumph over a non-conference opponent this season.

Before returning to the Buckeye State, Oberlin women's basketball will make a detour to Washington D.C. to tangle with the Catholic University of America. Action from our nation's capitol on Monday, January 2, 2017, is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
