Yeowomen Drop Overtime Heartbreaker at OWU

Delaware, Ohio - In overtime Ohio Wesleyan's Taylor Dickson banked in a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Oberlin College women's basketball team its first North Coast Athletic Conference loss of the season by the score of 78-77 on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.

Juniors Abby Andrews and Tyler Parlor, and sophomore Alex Stipano turned in career performances for the Yeowomen, but in the end it wasn't enough to come out on top. Andrews dropped in a career-best 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Parlor poured in a career-high 18 points, while Stipano notched a career - and team-high 20 as she also cashed in a career-best four 3-pointers.

Oberlin led by as many as six in the fourth quarter, but OWU kept coming. A layup from Parlor with 15 seconds to go put the Yeowomen out in front, 70-67, but just moments after missing two free throws, the Bishops' Trischa Lacy cashed in a game-tying three with eight ticks left. Oberlin had a chance to win it, but Stipano's long-range three from the top of the arc hit the front of the rim and rolled off to send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, the Yeowomen were clinging to a 75-72 advantage with 90 seconds left on the clock, but two OWU buckets coupled with two missed free throws and a turnover from Oberlin had the Bishops back in front by one. However, Andrews was fouled on a drive to the hoop and sent to the line with a chance put the Yeowomen ahead. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native did just that - touching up the first shot off the front of the rim and rolling it in before swishing the second attempt to make her a perfect 5-for-5 at the line on the day.

A timeout by the Bishops automatically advanced the ball into the front court and after some brief motion Dickson let her shot fly with a second left. The ball hit high off the glass and straight down through the hoop as the horn sounded.

The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC, while the Bishops moved to 3-4 and 1-0 in league play.

Both teams came out hot in the first quarter with the two foes essentially trading baskets throughout the opening frame. There was no more than a two-point differential through the first nine minutes of the period until a layup from Jasmine Sorrells pushed the Oberlin lead out to four and the Yeowomen would ultimately take a 22-18 cushion into the second quarter.

Early in the second session, the Yeowomen would open up a seven-point lead, 32-25, with 6:37 left in the half, but would manage just three more points the rest of the way. The Bishops responded with an 8-0 run that featured a pair of threes to capture the lead. A traditional 3-point play from Andrews would snap a three-minute scoring drought and tie the game at 35. Neither team was able to add any more points over the final 3:23 as they headed into the locker room tied.

The third quarter was nip-and-tuck with both teams having their respective runs in the period. An elbow jumper from Briana Santiago gave the Yeowomen a 56-50 lead with 2:01 left to play in the quarter, and Oberlin would again swell its margin up to six in the fourth, but couldn't make it stand up.

The Yeowomen shot an impressive 52.5 percent, hitting on 32-of-61 attempts. OWU finished at a 42.6 percent clip with 29 makes on 68 shots.

The game featured 19 lead changes and 13 ties along the way.

Oberlin now go nearly three full weeks without a game as their next scheduled contest isn't until December 30 when it travels to Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
