Volleyball Concludes Season at NCAC Tournament

Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team wrapped up its 2016 season on Saturday, dropping a pair of matches at the North Coast Athletic Tournament on the campus of Wittenberg University.

Seeded eighth in the tournament, the Yeowomen fell in straight sets to fourth-seeded Hiram and then lost a four-set decision to No. 7 Wooster to conclude the season with a record of 7-20.
Seniors Meredith Leung, Krista Langhans, Jillian Hostetler, Ave Spencer and Maggie Middleton each played in their final matches in the crimson and gold.

Hiram Recap
Against the Terriers, Oberlin ended on the wrong end of a 25-23 scorline in set one before falling 25-20 in the second. Looking to extend the match, the Yeowomen were unable to do so as the Terriers held on for a 26-24 win.

Junior Dana Thomas continued her strong tournament performance as she hit .500 in the match with 10 kills and just two errors on 16 swings. Lexi Mitchell added nine kills, but the Terriers forced her into eight errors.  Fellow first-year Maura Gibbs chipped in with six finishes of her own.

Senior Meredith Leung checked in with 13 assists and a team-high 16 digs, while rookie Samantha Lam dished out 14 helpers to go along with six digs.

After trailing by as many as seven midway through the opening set, Oberlin rallied to get within two, 22-20, on ace from Leung. Another ace from Lola Gatti had the deficit down to one at 23-22, but the Terriers would ultimately fend off the comeback bid for the two-point win.

The second set was eerily similar as the Yeowomen clawed out of a big early deficit to take a 19-18 lead. However, Hiram would go on to score seven of the game's next eight points to earn the victory.

The final set was nip-and-tuck throughout with Oberlin taking a late 23-22 lead on a kill from Maggie Middleton. Later leading 24-23, the Yeowomen needed just one more point to extend the match, but Marissa Jay responded with three straight kills to give her team the victory.

Wooster Recap
Against the Scots the Yeowomen dropped the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16 before rallying to win the third 25-16. However, they couldn't sustain the momentum as Wooster took the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth.

All-NCAC Second-Team selection Lexi Mitchell guided the Yeowomen with 13 kills, while Dana Thomas capped her strong tournament performance with eight.  Seniors Jillian Hostetler and Maggie Middleton chipped in seven and five send-downs, respectively.

Meredith Leung was the main setter throughout the match as she posted 28 assists to run her career total 3,224. She added seven digs and will depart Oberlin with 1,071.

Emily Kelkar paced the defense with 16 digs, while Mitchell aided the cause with 11.

Oberlin had an early lead in each of the first two games, but quickly fell out of system. However, things fell into place in the third as they used 9-2 run to open up a 20-13 cushion before closing the set with four straight points on a kill from Thomas and three Wooster attack errors.

In the fourth the Yeowomen fought through some early troubles to get within two, 17-15, but the Scots would go on to post eight of the next nine points to earn the win.

Oberlin will begin its preparations for the 2017 campaign this spring during the non-traditional season.
