Cleveland, Ohio – In a game that featured 21 lead changes and 12 ties, it was the Case Western Reserve University Spartans that edged the Oberlin College women's basketball team, 74-73, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
With 1:04 left in regulation, Oberlin's
Tyler Parlor would split a pair of free throws – making the first and missing the second – to even the score at 68. Both team's would have a chance to win it in regulation, but neither side could find the would-be-game-winning hoop to force overtime.
The Spartans started the extra fame with a 3-pointer, but four straight points from
Olivia Canning had the Yeowomen out in front by one, 72-71. With under two minutes to play, Canning would miss her first free throw, but made the second to put Oberlin on top 73-72. However, the Spartans' Kara Hageman was fouled with 1:13 left to play and sunk both her charity tosses to give the Spartans the win.
In the closing 60 seconds, the Yeowomen were unable to attempt a shot as the Spartans held on for the victory to move to 3-2 on the year, while Oberlin dropped back to 1-3.
Four Yeowomen finished in double figures headline by Canning who netted a career-high 21 points to go along with 16 rebounds and a career-high-tying eight blocks. The 6-foot-4 sophomore from Sudbury, Massachusetts, has posted a double-double in three of the first four games this season.
Parlor was also impressive, finishing one rebound shy of a triple-double with 10 points and nine rebounds to accompany her career-high 10 assists.
Junior
Abby Andrews added 12 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting to go along with six rebounds, while first-year
Jasmine Sorrells chipped in with a collegiate-best 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in just eight minutes of work off the bench.
Oberlin trailed 13-12 midway through the opening quarter, but closed the frame on an 11-5 spurt to claim a 23-18 lead after 10 minutes of action. With 42 seconds left in the stanza,
Alex Stipano's 3-pointer gave Oberlin its largest lead of the game at 21-15.
The Spartans responded with a 12-2 run of their own to grab a 30-25 advantage with 4:39 left in the opening half. Later trailing 35-29, the Yeowomen recaptured the lead with an 8-1 rally that featured two layups from Canning, one from Andrews and one from first-year
Sarah Thompson. When the halftime horn sounded it was all even at 39.
The third quarter was a tussle, but the Spartans would get some breathing room, opening up a 50-45 margin. However, Oberlin would close the quarter strong and head into the final 10-minute period ahead by the slimmest of margins, 55-54.
Midway through the fourth, one of three 3-pointers from Stipano had Oberlin on top 65-60, but Yeowomen would go without a point for nearly four minutes until a layup by Andrews made it 67-66 Oberlin with 2:05 to play in regulation to setup the nail-biting finish.
Oberlin shot an impressive 47.6 percent, hitting on 30-of-63 shots, while holding Case Western to 34.2 percent (25-of-73). The Yeowomen outscored the Spartans 46-34 in the paint and won the rebounding war 47-39. However, 20 Oberlin turnovers loomed large in the end as the Spartans converted those into 29 points.
The Yeowomen have a short turnaround as they will play in front of the home crowd for the first time this season on Monday night as the University of Mount Union invades Philips Gym for a 7 p.m. clash.
