Yeowomen Outlast Hiram in NCAC Opener

Hiram, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought road win at Hiram College, defeating the Terriers 56-52 in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools.

The trio of Abby Andrews, Olivia Canning and Tyler Parlor played in large role in handing Hiram its first loss of the year as they entered the contest at 3-0. Oberlin is now even at 1-1 on the young season.

The Terriers had no answer in slowing down Canning as she notched her second straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five assists and eight blocks in the game.

Andrews, who scored all 15 of her points in the first 20 minutes of play, added five assists and five rebounds, while Parlor chipped in with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting to accompany her seven-rebound effort.

Andrews came out hot as she personally had the Yeowomen out to an 8-3 lead, but the Terriers came back to tie it at 11 with 3:17 left in the opening quarter and would use an 11-6 run from there to close the period to grab a 22-17 lead after 10 minutes of play. Oberlin had trailed by as many as seven, but Canning closed the quarter with a buzzer-beating layup.

However, the Yeowomen would eventually take a slim 31-30 cushion into the intermission as they outscored the Terriers 14-8 in the second quarter. A 7-2 Yeowomen spurt that ended on a Parlor jumper gave them their first lead of the quarter at 29-28 and Andrews would later cap her 15-point half with a layup with 46 seconds to go, giving her side the halftime edge.

Both teams seemed out of sync early on after the third-quarter restart as Oberlin narrowly outscored Hiram 10-7 in the quarter to take a 41-37 advantage into the final frame of action.

The Yeowomen opened up an 11-point lead, 50-39, with 7:47 left in the game, but the Terriers wouldn't go away quietly. A 9-1 Hiram run that featured a Kaylee Shockley 3-pointer had the lead down to just three, 51-48, with half the of the period left to play.

Another three from Clover Kaple later had the Oberlin cushion shrunk down to two, 53-51, but the Yeowomen defense would buckle down over the final 2:17, holding Hiram to just one free throw make the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Kayla Yost led the Terrier effort with 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Oberlin shot 42.9 percent from the floor, dialing in on 24-of-56 attempts, while holding Hiram to just a 30.8 percent success rate with 20 makes on 65 shots. The rebounding battle was even at 40 per side.

The Yeowomen will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel across state lines to battle Trine University in Angola, Indiana. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
