Yeowomen Drop Season Opener at Baldwin Wallace

Berea, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team dropped its season-opening contest at Baldwin Wallace University, falling 70-41 to the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night.

Looking to avenge last season's 63-61 loss to the Yeowomen, BW was able to do so by taking advantage of 20 Yeowomen turnovers that turned into 20 points.

Sophomore center Olivia Canning posted the fourth double-double of her career as she finished 12 points on 6-of-15 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds to pace the Yeowomen.

Playing for the first time since getting injured last year on November 24 against Baldwin Wallace, sophomore Alex Stipano had a promising return to the court as she finished with eight points - all of which came in the first half. Abby Andrews also added eight points off the bench.

Oberlin led 7-4 with seven minutes left in the opening quarter, but cooled off quickly as the Yellow Jackets responded with an 8-0 spurt and ultimately led 12-9 at the end of the opening frame. The opening-game jitters were prevalent as the Yeowomen committed seven first-quarter turnovers.

The Yellow Jackets came out hot to start the second quarter and they stayed that way throughout, scoring 20 points in the frame en route to taking a 32-20 lead into the locker room at the intermission. A Stipano three with 1:07 left in the half had the deficit down to 10, but Clara Lemmon would get inside for a layup in the closing moments to make it a 12-point game at the break.

In the third the Yeowomen quickly cut the BW lead down to eight, but the Yellow Jackets responded and eventually opened up a 15-point advantage, 45-30, on a Hannah Fecht 3-pointer.

In the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets would increase their cushion to 20 and leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Oberlin shot 36.2 percent (17-of-47) from the floor, while Baldwin Wallace checked in at a 45.8 percent clip (27-of-59). The Yeowomen won the rebounding war 35-30, but the Yellow Jacket bench bunch outscored its Oberlin counterparts 43-11.

The Yeowomen will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they open conference play at Hiram College. Tip-time is set for 1 p.m.
