Crawfordsville, IN – The 23
rd-ranked Little Giants of Wabash College scored early and often as they cruised to a, 51-0, win over the Oberlin College Yeomen on Saturday afternoon at Hollett Little Giants Stadium.
The Little Giants scored four touchdowns in the first 15:03 and never looked back as the Yeomen offense was shutout for the first time this season. Oberlin netted 207 total yards on 68 plays, while Wabash posted 421 yards, which included 245 on the ground.
Freshman quarterback
Zach Taylor had a tough afternoon against one of the conference's best defenses he finished 9-of-23 for 106 yards. He was sacked three times and had two interceptions returned for touchdowns.
Sophomore wide out
Jabari Clemons was the bright spot of the offense as he had his best game of the season with 73 yards on four catches.
Chuck Williams led the ground attack with 42 yards on nine carries.
After stalling on their first drive, the Little Giants wasted no time in posting seven points on their next possession, going 69 yards on just three plays. The score came on a screen pass to Matt Penola who scampered 29 yards untouched on his way to the endzone.
Following a six-yard TD by Drake Christen, the Wabash defense got their scoring parade going as Taylor was intercepted by Austin Brown as he jumped an out route along the sideline and returned it 53 yards for the score. When it was all said and done, the Little Giants defense was responsible for 14 points in the win.
In the second quarter Penola added a 1-yard TD plunge, the Yeomen snapped the ball into the end zone that turned into a safety and Taylor was picked off again – this time by Ryan Walters who returned it 36 yards for the touchdown. Shamir Johnson would also cap a 4-play, 42-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run of his own. It all added up to the Yeomen trailing 44-0 at the half.
An early third-quarter touchdown by Bobby Blum would cap the game's scoring as he finished off a 10-play, 75-yard drive that took 5:27.
Von Wooding led the Oberlin defense with eight tackles, including a tackle-for-loss.
Drew Nolan and
Jonathon Smith chipped in with six stops each.
The victory moved the Little Giants to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC. The Yeomen remain winless at 0-6 and 0-5 in league action.
Oberlin will play its next three games at home starting this Saturday when it plays host to the College of Wooster. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
