Chapman Bests Yeowomen

ORANGE, Calif. - Oberlin College volleyball fell in straight sets at Chapman University in their final match in the Golden State.

After dropping a close battle to Pomona-Pitzer last night, the Yeowomen returned for the second match in 16 hours to conclude the fall break West Coast swing. A little fatigue and lack of offensive rhythm were the Yeowomen's undoing as the Panthers coasted to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-17) win.

With the Yeowomen down 6-2 early in the opening set, the Panthers ripped off seven straight points to put the Oberlin deficit at 11. The Chapman advantage would be too much to get back and the Yeowomen surrendered the first.

The Oberlin women found a spark in the second set, but the Panthers wouldn't give an inch. In the late stages, the Crimson and Gold tried to claw back into the set and the match, but another Panther's streak at 19-17 brought the frame to set-point. The Yeowomen held off a Chapman victory for a couple of points, but couldn't prevent the inevitable as the Panthers took a two-set lead.

Three four-plus-point runs throughout the third set was the Yeowomen's ultimate undoing as Chapman closed the day's match with a 25-20 win.

The Oberlin attack had trouble finding traction, hitting .086 over the match compared to the Panther's .296. The Yeowomen did end up at the positive end of the stat line in service aces with eight to Chapman's six, and blocks, 5-to-3 in Oberlin's favor.

Lexi Mitchell led the Yeowomen for the second match in a row with six kills to accompany her one assist and four digs. Ave Spencer and Dana Thomas followed suit with four kills each in the loss.

All-time assist leader Meredith Leung and Samantha Lam shared time on the setup, posting nine assists each. Leung finished with three aces against the Panthers, leaving her with a team-high ten over the three-match California swing.

Emily Kelkar and Krista Langhans led the defensive effort with seven digs each followed by Leung with six.

The stumbles in the Golden State move the Yeowomen to 7-14 overall as they remain 1-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

After a flight back to the Buckeye State, Oberlin College volleyball will return to action on Wednesday, October 26, when they take on Denison University.

First serve from the comforts of Philips Gymnasium is slated for 7 p.m.
