Los Angeles, CA - The Oberlin College volleyball team dropped its first match on the left coast, falling 3-1 to Occidental on Wednesday evening.
The Yeowomen lost each of the first two sets 25-17, before rallying to win 25-21 in the third. Looking to force a decisive fifth set, Oberlin came up short in a 32-30 setback.
Dana Thomas and
Lexi Mitchell spearheaded the offense, registering 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Jillian Hostetler hit an effective .462 with seven kills on 13 swings to assist their efforts.
Playing in her home state, senior
Meredith Leung did the bulk of the setting as she registered 31 assists to go along with seven digs.
Mitchell, who added 11 digs, was impressive from behind the backline, dropping in half of the team's 10 service aces in the match.
Also playing in front of her hometown faithful, sophomore
Emily Kelkar impressed with a team-best 16 digs.
After struggling to find their rhythm in the first two sets, the Yeowomen were able to get on track in the third, hitting .214 in the game. Oberlin raced out to an 8-2 lead and after Oxy got back to 11-9, the Yeowomen responded with a 6-2 spurt to put the set out of reach for the Tigers.
In the fourth, the Yeowomen led 15-12 midway through the set, but the Tigers came roaring back with a 10-4 run to capture a 22-19 cushion of their own. Oberlin fought back to tie the match to push the Tigers past the 25-point mark to determine winner, but the Yeowomen ended on the wrong side of the thriller.
The loss dropped the Yeowomen to 7-12 on the year, while Occidental improved to 9-11.
Oberlin returns to action on Friday night when it battles Pomona-Pitzer at 10 p.m. EDT.
